Biography

Fire Escapes are a three-piece rock and roll band, formed in Calgary in late 2009. Long time friends Mark Schmidt, Dillon Whitfield and Mike Paulson write songs that draw influence from each of their varied backgrounds. (Schmidt, a well traveled rock drummer, Whitfield, an experienced indie rock writer & singer, Paulson, a trained blues guitarist, with a love for hard rock)

They formed initially as a short-term project, with the goal of adapting Dmitri Shostakovich’s eighth symphony from string quartet to guitar, bass, and drums. This was performed recently during Calgary's "High Performance Rodeo." They have since recorded an EP of original material, touching on the band’s interest in classical music, but showing their love of hard rock and pop structure. It is an album of rhythmic, guitar driven rock songs, coloured with haunting keyboards and atmospheric vocals.
