Fire For Effect
Fire For Effect Independent
by Matthew Hoffman
Staff Writer
Comments: "Five Massachusetts Yankees in King Bush's Court," wow! Finally, a Pro-War album dedicated to our brave troops. It's about fucking time!
Fire For Effect is an artillery command used in the United States Army, which essentially means, "to continue to deliver devastating fire upon the enemy until ordered to stop." In this case, it's the moniker of a five-member group of Pro-War head banging Patriots from rural Massachusetts.
The album is pretty much straightforward in your face death/thrash metal using 1986 Bay Area Exodus, Testament or Slayer style melodies and rhythms. Hard, in your face drums and solid kick ass guitar rhythms abound from pillar to post on this hard and heavy nine-track attack. The vocals are almost half-spoken/half-sung, and always grating and disturbing to the ears. At first, this might take you back but it not only grows on you it starts to become more unique, creative and distinct with every song. Rhythms guitarist sets up solid death metal riffs while lead beast Johnson is an absolute sick fucker on the lead pieces.
The first song is "Tread the Line" and is a six and a half minute journey with tremendous drums from Joe Pelletier setting the macabre tone. Johnson highlights the fray with a Kerry King-like solo which warps into a more unique distortion filled lead before it's over. The second ditty is "Violence Detonation" and is a direct assault into your ears with Pelletier playing a high-pitched slow but distinctly different drum-line behind Allison's dominant guitar riffs. Leading the boys towards the fire on track three, "Depth Charge" is certainly Luke Kimball on vocals, and then Lombardi on bass taps a couple peaceful notes before Johnson gets his shit on with a demonically long and eerie lead. "War Machine" starts out with rocket fast riffage by the axe monsters and more screaming by Kimball, including the following powerful lyrics in the chorus "I am the war machine, a determination forged in steel, everlasting war machine your scars of battle will never heal." The instrumental section of this song is EXPERTLY done though and makes you realize these boys could make a huge splash in the New England Metal scene and all around the world really really soon. The bass is beautiful the lead guitar sounded almost middle eastern influenced and the drums as usual kicked serious ass, then later in the song Johnson gets even more kudos' with a slow unique lead that is damn near perfect.
Johnson again raises eyebrows with a slow, absolutely complete solo in "Synechthran" when his guitar seems to be crying for the fallen American men and women. Holy Fuck. Later in the song the lead almost sounds like a modern interpretation of early '70s Black Sabbath Tony Iommi leads. Damn boys, well done. Up next is "Pro-War," where a lead piece is interrupted by our President speaking "On September 11th, enemies of freedom have declared war against our country…"as the brilliant Pelletier taps out patriotic yet rogue beats then Bush fades out as Pelletier taps metal and a horse starts neighing. Gosh Darn Fucking Genius FFE, this is outstanding work fellas. Man these sick bastards simply get it, both Politics and Metal.
"Operation Dead Flowers" cuts more Sabbathesque rhythms into a good straight ahead heavy metal song. Song eight "Desolate Walls" is an instrumental and it's so damn good you'll be happy and furious at the same time. The boys Allison and Johnson start out playing the most Temple of The Dog' peaceful style acoustic and then warp it into electric where more lead distortion beauty is molded, and then finally Pelletier stars again over the fray of heavy, heavy, heavy metal axe riffs. Johnson freaks the fuck out and taps and slides up and down the fret board like Bode Miller on crack and then the music cuts and a soft soulful yet frisky acoustic piece interrupts the violence again. It all ends with more devastation and then another slow piece making it one of the best realistic instrumentals you'll hear. It resembles the hectic frantic pace of war and then the few minutes of solace in between the fire fights. The last song is "Ruin, Rebuild, Reinstate" and when you hear Kimball screaming again you'll understand the earlier comment about how much this vile serpent grows on you.

An independently produced debut album from a new metal band could not have been done any better! The album cover art was top notch as well and features an awesome drawing of a group of G-I's standing before a burning Arab Palace. It is drawn from the soldier's side. Thanks fellas and good luck. If these son's a bitches aren't on a huge label by next spring, then Hillary Clinton really is a Conservative.

"Mark Ganzherrlich Review"

'Fire for Effect'
(Self released in 2005)

MARK: 94/100

Like Billy Milano used to say: we are pacific but there are some who are just envious of what we have built and how we live and they want to wage a war against us behaving like those children crying and pulling their moms' skirts; to them we say: "Fuck the Middle East!"
Only after a long while can we hear another straightforward pro-war album with excellent lyrics from these 5 young newcomers from Massachussetts; everyone can see what's happening in the country led by the Neanderthal man who doesn't wash (Iran) these days and laxity is letting the West enemies florish. It's undeniable that W. Bush didn't expect his popularity to decrease so much (now he can count on a miserable 34% of countrymen still favorable to his policy), but the main reason is just because the US troops are using a velvet glove in Iraq and this endangers the US troops; the result is almost 3,000 young US soldiers (too many considering that a tougher strategy would've sped up the war against terrorists) have come back in coffins hidden to the eyes of most US TV's and the proliferation of mothers-against-war movements, not only in renowned Bolshy cities like NY but also in Texas.

Musically speaking, the 5 artists deal with a branch of Bay Area Thrash including several breaks alà Pantera, while the vocals remind me of Violence's, even tho more hoarse and closer to speaking; in other terms singer Luke Kimball screams like a lieutenant colonel leading his troopers to uncreate the foe while he's proudly advancing careless of his atrocious multiple injuries.
The start is given by "Tread the Line", a track that will take no prisoners live while it's already awesome in the studio: crushing thrashy riffs between Testament, Exodus and Slayer, solid refrains and rhythm changes constituting the real strentgh point of the act.
A good contrast is expressed by the vocals in "Violence - Detonation"; angry ones and other hopeless ones in the background, whereas the harsher breaks are in the following "Depth Charge", opened by a martial pattern and displaying a memorable axe solo.
Me and my colleagues all agree that the highlight of the CD is "War Machine", an irresistible song you'll not ever be tired of listening to.
Things change a bit with "Synechthran", beginning with apocalyptical Doom elements and then steering towards the typical Thrash style begun the 5-piece's trademark; worth being mentioned the melancholic middle solo as well.
"Pro-War" is nothing but shattering Groove metal with Hard Rock licks, a Gang Green-inspired acceleration and twisted insertions; then you can hear a George W. speech preceding inhuman final screams. I wonder why no-one there's suggested this track as a moral supporter for the US armed forces in Irak and Afghanistan yet; someone reading this review and working for or knowing somebody in AFN or Pentagon channel should put an end to such an injustice.
Dark metal and traditional metal go hand in hand in "Operation Dead Flowers"; soon afterwards it's time for a semi-ballad, "Desolate Walls", an instrumental rife with chiaroscuros.
Finally "Ruin, Rebuild and Reinstate" recurs to more killer rifferama and the last Thrash dash.

A real positive debut, one of those records growing on you maybe because of the rough sounds close to the ones of a Thrash demo or a low-fi mixed Black/Thrash metal record with poderous basses; Fire for Effect honestly play a genre where they don't make up anything but they do it in a way where they challenge you to find a second where you get bored. If they get rid of a few conspicuous influences and find a suitable label, we'll be allowed to expect for them to deliver us quite a bit of delightful surprises. Both thumbs up for the front cover artwork depicting G-I units leaving after a burning Arab building! Should I one day choose to hijack a plane full of Arabs in order to crash it onto Mecca, I would do it sparkled-eyed with a machine gun in my right hand and an I-Pod playing "Fire for Effect" in my left one. God bless America.

FIRE FOR EFFECT s/t

Fire For Effect is forged in American Pride, and have recorded this self-titled album in dedication to the American armed forces. The music is rooted in Old School Hardcore and Metal, and well written. The heaviness backs up the lyrical content. These guys are ready to throw down.

FIRE FOR EFFECT
Self Titled
Self-Released

This was an old school thrash band and a very good one I must say. The music is above average and the songs are crunchy and powerful as this played on. The vocals are the thrash style. The crunch is there for sure. This band adds a bit of variety to their songs and I think the passion is there, this just kicked my ass. info: www.fireforeffect.us
