"First Waking Breath's Long Journey"

By: ERIKA SOROCCO - For The Californian

While many bands find easing into the local music scene to be a simple task, Temecula-based band, First Waking Breath, found themselves faced with a wide array of obstacles, which they had to overcome, before they could have their music heard by the masses.

Temecula's Greyson Duncan, Dino Wilson, and James Wilson have taken quite a winding journey to end up where they are today.

"From day one it has been a constant struggle," Duncan said. "Band members James and Dino ---- being brothers ---- have relocated several times throughout California. Since we started at a young age, it made it difficult to play shows, and to practice from far distances between each other."

A few years back, the Wilson brothers moved closer to Duncan and things were looking up. But Duncan had to relocate to Florida and soon after and then the Wilson brothers to Indiana.

"Finally, we rented a small house in Indiana, and started playing shows in the Indianapolis area, and began to build a local following," Duncan said. "In 2005, First Waking Breath said goodbye to the Midwest, packed up, and headed back to California. With the little money that we had, we started a new life by living house to house with friends. Once we had saved up enough money ---- we lived in a cheap motel in Lake Elsinore for two months ---- before finally moving into a house in Murrieta."

First Waking Breath came together in a fusion of bike rides, phone books, and human cardboard cut-outs.

"Greyson actually first met Dino and I, when he was riding his bike through the neighborhood," James Wilson said. "Dino was shooting pellet guns at human cardboard cut-outs, and Greyson came over and said 'We will be good friends,' and we have been ever since. In the beginning, we didn't all have instruments, so I would keep rhythm on a phone book, as Greyson played guitar, and Dino played bass."

The band Saturday at Temecula Community Recreation Center with Chrysalis, Alexandria, Few Thy Voice and more bands to be announced. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show is open to all ages. Upcoming shows include the Knitting Factory in Hollywood on Sunday, The Crest in Los Angeles on Aug. 11, and Tap Daddy's in San Jacinto on Aug. 18.

Crediting artists such as Nirvana, the Dead Kennedys, Tool and Glassjaw as influences, First Waking Breath believes that its upcoming performance will make jaws drop.

"An energetic show with original music unlike any other three-piece you've ever heard can be expected," said Dino Wilson.

(Extended Bio)

“First Waking Breath” formed in Temecula, CA. They started as a grunge/punk band in 2000, after Greyson Duncan (vocals/guitar) presented Jimmy Wilson (drums) and Dino Wilson (Bass) with a few songs he had written in hopes of one day forming a band. They all shared similar musical influences such as Nirvana, Dead Kennedys, Tool, and Glassjaw to name a few. The group first formed under the name of “Lack of Authority” playing small shows through out southern California. Soon to follow was a 13 track demo complied of short, yet meaningful songs ranging in topics such as government, suicide, love, and society in general. From the start, First Waking Breath had something to say and they were going to say it.
By the end of 2003, their style progressed to heavier melodic rock, yet still showing signs of punk. After their second name change to “Empty”, the band went into the studio to record a three song EP featuring their epic song, “A Dreamt Reality“. Just as things were looking bright for the trio, bad news struck when Greyson had no choice but to move to Florida. The band made a vow to reunite.
In the winter of 2003 Jimmy and Dino had moved to Indiana. Meanwhile, Greyson had been writing songs in Florida. In 2004, the group reunited and rented a small house in Indiana and started again under their third and final name “First Waking Breath”. They started to play shows in the Indianapolis area and began to build a local following. In 2005, they said goodbye to the Mid-West, packed up, and headed back to California.
In the winter of 2006, First Waking Breath recorded there current self titled 3 song EP. As of now, they are currently playing shows throughout the west coast with plans of a US tour in the near future. They have had a considerable amount of airplay from various radio stations throughout the US. First Waking Breath is determined to make a name for themselves in this ever changing music scene. Their style has been described as loud and aggressive rock, with hints of punk, pop, and metal driven by unique and melodic vocals. First Waking Breath has shown no signs of slowing down.
