"FITTER celebrates 10-year anniversary with EP release, "Through the Green Jungles of Plenty""

Wilfredo, Ed and James of the afro dub-rock experimental band, FITTER, have a lot to celebrate within the next couple of weeks. Since their 2006 album debut, You Don't Belong Here, But We’ll Use You Anyway, the trio has made a place for themselves in the underground music scene performing at local hot spots, sharing the stage with Latin Alternative greats (Kinky, Lucy Bell) and earning their brownie points in various battle of the bands competitions. Celebrating their 10-year anniversary and releasing their sophomore album, James (drums/percussion) extends a warm anniversary party invitation and talks to Al Borde about what it takes to be with the same band members for nearly a decade, and about how female power is more than present in their new album, Through the Green Jungles of Plenty.

Through the Green Jungles of Plenty:

Our previous release was about 6 years in the making, from the band’s inception. Our upcoming release, Through the Green Jungles of Plenty, is raw, experimental and has a deep sense of femininity to it. One of the tracks on the EP, “Oye Ma (Para Monseñor)” for example, came from a series of conversations that our lead singer, Wilfredo, had with his mom. They had great conversations about things that are going on in life right now and about where the world is at the time. He took those moments and made them into something amazing. He took a trip last year to El Salvador where he was able to reconnect with his Salvadoran roots, and that too was a huge influence on the EP. Wilfredo’s grandmother inspires another track on the album so I suppose that’s where the feminine touch comes into play. Wilfredo took the most influential women in his life and his experience in El Salvador and wrote some truly honest songs.

Even the artwork for our EP is female empowered. We have six female artists contributing to the artwork with each one of them taking one song and creating an art piece for it which will be used for the booklet of the album.

The album is a 6-track piece with every song containing a unique and independent sound. During the recording process our sound engineer asked us if we were sure that we wanted each one to sound so different from the other, I suppose that’s not the case with most bands. But that’s what we wanted for this album. We went into the recording studio, jammed out and killed it!

10 years and running:

FITTER was originally just Wilfredo and myself. A year later Ed joined in. When we got together we wanted to do our own thing and write our own music. We wanted to write about the world as we saw it, and we were happy with that. We wanted to do whatever made us happy and that was the one and only plan.

It has taken us this long to be where we are now and although we have only released two albums, we’ve learned a lot throughout our ten years together. We’ve known each other long enough that we’re comfortable with one another and we can tell each other if something doesn’t fly by us; I think that’s been key to the 10 years that we’ve spent together as a working band. But band members don’t have to know each other as long as we have to coexist and play in the same band. So long as they make a connection with their band mates it should all be good. In my experience, my band mates are my family and I actually spend more time with the band than with my own family!

The Monstrous Industry:

We’re not studied musicians. We acquired everything we know on our own, which is one of the reasons it’s taken us so long to only release 2 albums. This is a hard industry, but we’ve survived and taught ourselves a lot. We’re very aware of the fact that we’ve only released two albums in our entire 10-year span, but the truth of the matter is that we’re ok with that. The way we see it, it’s part of our evolution as musicians. We follow our own program; we’ve been doing that since we started some 10 years ago. We’re happier this way. We’re putting out something that is solid for us and we have absolutely no regrets from how we’ve managed ourselves because what we have acquired is a lifetime of knowledge.

El Salvador or bust!:

Our goal now is to push the album independently and to take our music to El Salvador. There’s a big scene out there that is unseen and we want to take our music and expose El Salvador to it as well as bring some of those influences over here. Our long-term goal is to continue evolving, to stay together as a band end eventually become financially stable to keep the band going. We’re not expecting stardom but as long as we’re able to get paid and do what we love, then we’re happy with that.

Anniversary Party:

We’re currently working hard to finalize all of the details for our anniversary show. We weren’t playing many gigs while we were composing and recording this EP so we really want to get out there and just jam. This anniversary show will be the first of a series of that will incorporate art displays and photography aside from our performance. We love visual artwork and there’s definitely some type of transition from that to our music so it all intertwines. It’ll definitely give the people their money’s worth.

-- The digital release of “Through the Jungles of Plenty” is around the corner and will be celebrated with a release party @ Señor Fish in Downtown L.A. scheduled for December 12, 2009. As a freebie, the boys of FITTER are making two of their “Through the Green Jungles of Plenty” tracks available for download, so stream FITTER here and check them out at their 10-year anniversary show @ The Waterfront in Marina del Rey on November 14th.

Through the Green Jungles of Plenty..."

"Through the Green Jungles of Plenty..."
