Fitz Leland

I am a pop musician from Chicago, but currently reside in Phoenix, where I study marketing and entrepreneurship at Arizona State. I was a D1 track athlete there, but I decided to quit the team and pursue music with much more intensity.

I began making music in 2016 as a sophomore in high school after my first break up, as many do. I was initially enticed by the therapeutic and creative outlet that lyricism provided, so I naturally gravitated toward rap. For years I would sing on my hooks and rap on the verses. Nearly everyone—including close friends and strangers—told me that my singing was MUCH better than my rapping, so I recently began to strictly sing. Additionally, it's much easier to develop my brand as a pop musician than it is as a wanna-be white rapper from the well-off suburbs of Chicago. While I may have made more money from my allowance than I did from pushing drugs, the lyrical qualities and rap-like flow of my past often show light in the music I make today.

My current music can be described as a mix of Frank Ocean, Khalid, and Joji. My songs often rely on guitar samples, lo-fi drums, and catchy, melodic, vocal harmonies. This is not a strict formula, though. For example, I also have songs with experimental piano sounds and trap drums. 

I often write sad, but honest songs that I imagine people could chill (or cry) to. I do, though, have more upbeat, positive singles I plan to release this year. The messages in my music often reflect on love, mental health, confidence, and the process of maturing. While these are fairly serious messages, the brand I represent consists of showing my honest and goofy personality, as I hope this honesty serves as evidence that showing one's true colors provides a more fulfilling life.
