Bio
Flags were born in Surrey, UK, in 2009. Their music mixes the attitude and popularity of alternative rock with the unexpected rhythms and quirkiness of African tribal music. With influences ranging from the off-beat Dave Brubeck Quartet and the thump of Jack white to the harmonies of Ladysmith Black-Mambaza and innovation of post-'66 Beatles, it is easy to see how their eclectic sound generates mass appeal.
They consist of three principal members: Marc Girdlestone (vocals, guitar, samples); David Joyson (guitar, piano, djembe) and Pete Knapp (drums, marimba, percussion).
Traveling through much of Africa has influenced their sound to the extent that the percussive, primal beats of djembes, marimbas and talking drums have been integral instruments in their recordings.
Their 3-track EP 'First Tapes' was independently released in September 2009. Each track was recorded, mixed and mastered at their studio in Surrey. Two additional tracks for the EP are currently being mixed and are due for release in April 2010.
Their performances have attracted a growing fan-base and the attention of local newspapers. They are multi-instrumentalists who constantly switch between instruments, creating a performance which is striking both musically and visually.
