"Nightclub Notebook"

"A pleasant discovery made last weekend during Nova Scotia Music Week in Liverpool was the music of Lunenburg County quintet Flat Fifth, whose music is a fascinating blend of pop, folk and jazz, featuring the songs of Paul Buchanan, whose sound falls somewhere between Burt Bacharach and Squeeze.
Currently the band has a self-titled six song e.p., with samples available at www.myspace.com/flatfifth, but you can hear them for yourself live at Stayner's Wharf in Halifax on Friday night." - The Chronicle Herald

"Lunenburg folk fest keeps keeping it real"

"The four mainstage shows... introduced at least one or two new and outstanding groups or individual performers... Sunday night's finale in the tent began with the relatively new Western swing/honky-tonk quartet Flat Fifth with pianist Paul Buchanan, violinist Eilidh Campbell, double bass player George Barkhouse and drummer Geordie Comstock.
They play four-to-the bar with a jazzy inflection paced by Buchanan's jazzy breaks and warmed by his strong, lyric baritone voice." - The Chronicle Herald

"Dear Flat Fifth,"

Dear Flat Fifth,

Tonight's performance was an experience of heavenly proportions.
Every one of you rocked so f***ing hard, it was ridiculous.
The overall outcome and purpose of this note is to thank you all for this immaculately enjoyable performance.
Pass these compliments to the rest of the band.

Much love,
Nick, Dave, Spencer

Bio

The new album is here! "Alfalfa Honey - The music of Paul Buchanan and Flat Fifth". Recorded at legendary CBC Studio H in Halifax and co-produced by Buchanan and 13 time ECMA winner Glenn Meisner, the album's intelligent pop groove is a fusion of what makes the Canadian East Coast music scene great. Melodically driven, the band has been described as “a fascinating blend of pop, folk and jazz” and "on the leading edge of a new sound".

Buchanan's compositions are miles apart from anything else being released these days. Haunting instrumentals, subtle ballads and driving pop tunes effortlessly flow from one track to the next all unified by Paul's incomparable songwriting style.

Buchanan & Flat Fifth just finished a string of CD release shows in support of the new album. The band has doubled in size for this new live show to include string and horn sections - reminiscent of another great Canadian band, Lighthouse. From elegantly arranged strings to powerful horns their live show is truly breathtaking. Simply put by Halifax's The Carleton - "KILLER!"

The shows will be the basis of a soon to be released DVD this fall and were filmed by Mat Dunlap and engineered by Kirk Comstock. The band's online video presence featuring this wonderful live show is sure generate interest from promoters both far and wide.

Not only is Buchanan's live show sublime, his commercial potential is evident. "Wish I Didn't Know..." topped the East Coast Countdown charts for an unprecedented four weeks straight and spent three months in the top ten. His latest single "Green Box" was just featured as single of the week and is already in steady rotation on stations in NS.

Buchanan is currently working on a second string of shows this Fall in support of Alfalfa Honey and the accompanying DVD.

This band is hot, their songs are catchy, they are great live and people love them. What else is there to say?

Well, one thing...

"As individuals the band members shine: as a group they are brilliant"
