"All-nighter led band to Big Gig"

Although Flavia & the Red is one of only three finalists in Summerfest's Land the Big Gig competition, the band almost didn't enter the contest at all.

Fortunately, the Red's bassist, Caroline Cirone, pushed frontwoman Flavia Camilla Watson to give it a shot.

"She's from Chicago, and she reminded me of the deadline," Watson said during a recent phone interview. "I was super busy, and I wasn't certain I wanted to make a video, but we pulled an all-nighter, and it was a little decision that changed a lot about our lives."

The decision was made through more than 200,000 online votes that plucked Flavia & The Red and the other two finalists from more than 100 acts that submitted original songs in video form. It's an interesting step up for a band that has already weathered the difficulties of the crowded Los Angeles entertainment milieu.

"We used to do a lot of the L.A. gigs where you have to bring along your people, and when you do that, it's about the money," Watson said of the well-known "pay to play" practice. It's just a horrible cycle, and now we're just doing house-band things where people are there for the music."

Better gigs have helped boost what has already been an increasing confidence within the band. Watson, who had grown up in Dublin, Ireland, and Florence, Italy, moved to L.A. about three years ago to attend the California Institute for the Arts, where she met enough musicians to try different lineups before clicking into the current quintet.

"This is finally like our group," Watson said. "We've been together for about nine or 10 months, and it's so much about chemistry when you're rehearsing and performing. What we have right now works great professionally."

That much is evident from "Too Late to Cry," the seductively lounging blues number the band submitted to Land the Big Gig. The members of the Red - Cirone, guitarist Chris Pucher, keyboardist Rich Brown and drummer Isaac Watts - coax Watson into territory that Dr. John and Pasty Cline might both appreciate. They've recently recorded several more songs for a debut album they hope to release in September.

For now, though, they're focused on winning over more fans, and perhaps even winning this contest.

"Even if our music isn't your favorite kind of style, you can find it enjoyable," Watson said. We've got a good look, we're fun to watch, and we're not afraid to be ourselves." - JS Online, Tap Milwaukee

"Land the Big Gig down to three finalists"

A Chicago-based former contestant on "The Voice", a brother-sister duo from Burlington and a blues-funk band from Los Angeles are the finalists in the Land the Big Gig competition sponsored by Summerfest, Tap Milwaukee and Boston Store's Mambo apparel brand.

Bands and musicians from across the United States were invited to upload videos of original music for the national music talent search. From more than 100 videos and more than 200,000 online votes cast, the three acts were chosen for a trip to Milwaukee to perform live at Summerfest on July 4.

Flavia & the Red from Los Angeles and Jamie Lono from Chicago are two of the three finalists. The third band, 1703, is based in St. Paul, Minn., but the brother-sister duo only left Burlington six months ago.

The three bands will compete in front of a live audience from 4 to 7 p.m. July 4 at the Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard. The judges are "American Idol" finalist Danny Gokey; Summerfest vice president of entertainment Bob Babisch; Tyrone "DJ Bizzon" Miller, who co-writes the Hip-Hop Takeover blog for the Journal Sentinel, and Gretchen Bartlett of The Lake, WLWK-FM (94.5).

The winning act receives $25,000. The second-place band receives $12,500, and the third-place act takes home $7,500.

Ah, but the competition is about more than the prize, Babisch said.

"I think it's the exposure, for starters", he said. "Exposure before a large crowd in that setting translates to more album sales, maybe people going to their website and people who want to see them again. The days of record companies breaking artists are gone. Artists pretty much have to break themselves."

Finalists Brandon and Rachel Dawley are an acoustic duo performing as 1703. Brandon, 20, and Rachel, 19, grew up in Burlington but only recently moved to St. Paul, where they found inspiration for the band's name: Their apartment number is 1703. They've played a few gigs in the Twin Cities, including a tailgate party before a Twins game - a tough gig for a Brewers fan.

"I did feel dirty," Brandon said by phone.

The siblings were encouraged by their father's love of music and still play with their dad, Jon, as the Dawleys.

Chicago musician Lono performed on Season 2 of "The Voice". Lono, who plays pop, acoustic and blues compositions, has an album due out this summer. You can download his single at jamielonomusic.com.

"St. Charles native to compete as finalist with Flavia and The Red in Big Gig contest at Summerfest in Milwaukee"

The band Flavia and The Red, with bassist Caroline Cirone, a 2010 St. Charles North High School graduate, will perform on the Fourth of July as one of three finalists in the Land the Big Gig competition at Milwaukee’s Summerfest.

Cirone, a music student at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, Calif., returns to the Midwest with the band to compete for their share of $45,000 in cash and prizes. Flavia and The Red were selected as finalists from hundreds of entrants nationwide, based on the results of online voting.

The bassist grew up in St. Charles and participated in the St. Charles North Jazz Workshop. As a CalArts music student, Cirone met her band mates and they began to perform in the Los Angeles area in venues such as The House of Blues and The Key Club. Currently working on their debut album, “The Girl Who Left Town,” Flavia and The Red performs original songs, as well as covers by such artists as Stevie Wonder and Van Morrison. The band consists of Flavia Watson on vocals, Cirone on bass, Chris Pucher on guitar, Isaac Watts on drums, and Rich Brown on keyboard.

“We are so thankful to everyone who voted for us to get us here; this is such a great opportunity,” Cirone says, “I am thrilled to be back in the Chicago area, surrounded by family and friends.”

The other two finalists in the Summerfest competition are Jamie Lono, a Vernon Hills native who competed on “The Voice,” and the band 1703, a brother-sister duo from Wisconsin. “American Idol” finalist Danny Gokey will host the Summerfest event, which takes place at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, on the Briggs and Stratton Big Backyard Stage.

Bio

Los Angeles-based band, Flavia & The Red, has shot onto the music scene like a bullet. The principal singer and songwriter is 22-year-old Flavia Watson. Born in California, but raised through her formative years in Ireland and Italy, Flavia exhibits a traveled and seasoned prowess that most women her age lack. Equipped with a sultry and soulful voice, her presence is the personification of the color red—emotional, fiery, and passionate.
But a talented front woman is only as good as her band. Since its inception in 2010, Flavia & The Red has shown tremendous growth gigging and captivating audiences nationwide. After various lineup changes, the band now consists of Chris Pucher on guitar, Isaac Watts on drums, Rich Brown on keys, and Max Benson on bass. Each member contributes his and her own unique qualities and influences to the secret recipe that is The Red’s musically energetic and soulful brew. The band’s overall sound contains elements of classic and modern R&B, pop, and rock. Anchored by a tight rhythm section, the music exhibits memorable melodies and interactive improvisation with Flavia’s emotional and poetic lyrics at the forefront.
The band has been touring and promoting their debut album, Too Late to Cry, which was released in December of 2012. In the summer of 2013, they successfully organized their first national tour, where they performed in the Southwest and Midwest. When not on the road they can be seen at the hottest clubs and lounges in LA, including a bi-monthly residency at Nic’s Martini Lounge in Beverly Hills. In the summer of 2012 they were chosen from hundreds of bands nationwide to go to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and perform at Summerfest, the world's largest music festival. There, they won 2nd place at the Land the Big Gig Competition.
Flavia & The Red is taking the future into its own hands and will continue to grow as it has over the last few years. They have already been featured on various blogs and magazines, including the cover story for LA lifestyle magazine, Back Seat Quarterly, and in Dublin, Ireland's Intallaght Magazine. They are currently on rotation for various radio stations around the U.S and performed live on television for WGN, as well as on Park City Television in Park City, Utah. They are constantly writing new material, planning more tours across the country, and have a new album in the works.
