"Artist Spotlight: Fleeta Partee"

Seattle emcee Fleeta Partee has just released his new EP, Life Muzik, today on Animal House Records. With production handled mostly by Vitamin D and a cut by Jake One, the 7 track EP is definitely worth picking up. If you’re still hesitant, let us introduce you to Fleeta Partee…
Where you reppin?
I’m reppin Seattle Washington the reign city, to be specific I rep the essence of the Central District! I say that cause the area is now Gentrified. I rep a time when there was community, creativity and pride in the area; when originality was a must whenever you bust!
Introduce yourself:
This is Reign City microphonist Fleeta Partee, veteran of the Seattle Hip Hop scene and Hip Hop culture participant. I spell it Reign cause our creative mind-state reigns supreme. The rain keeps us mentally strong and very cerebral. Originality is what I’m about; from the flow to the go to the know. No gimmicks, foul ups, bleeps or blunders. Everybody needs Partee Time!
Where did the name Fleeta Partee come from?
The name Fleeta comes from my father being involved with the Black Panther Party and after that, the African People’s Socialist Party Out of Oakland, California. Basically my father’s involvement in the Black Power movement, community activism and black history in general. I was named after Fleeta Drumngo, Jonathan Jackson and George Jackson… The Soledad Brothers… Revolutionaries basically. The Last name is just that. My last name… sort of a gift and a curse grown up lol. When I touch mics, I’m giving all me. So fake handles and gimmick names are unnecessary. Plus it’s just a dope name with culture and history behind it.
Main musical inspirations:
My musical inspirations come from many different angles… from Led Zepplin, Dead Kennedy’s, Bad Brains, and Jimi Hendrix… to Muddy Waters, Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Womack, and Aretha Franklin… to Rakim, EPMD, Kool Herc, Bambata, Big Daddy Kane, Nas, Marley Marl, 2 Pac, Dead Prez, Biggie, Black Thought, AZ, and Sadat X. I’m all over the place cause I enjoy music in general. It’s the soundtrack to life. Life has many moments so there isn’t one song or music genre that’ll fit those moments… many influences and many sounds I dig!!
When did you fall in love with Hip Hop?
I fell in love with Hip Hop from birth… funny as that sounds it’s the truth. It’s in you, not on you. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t express through a Hip Hop state of mind.
Current projects we should be looking out for:
First and foremost, Life Muzik the EP dropping June 26th! Like I said before, music and real Hip Hop in general is the soundtrack to life; thus the title of the EP. It’s the soundtrack to my life and the society we live in. There’s seven tracks from me, five produced by Seattle Hip Hop legend Vitamin D and one by Reign City legend Jake One. I brought in one EW producer, Lord Sith because we just seamed to mesh once we got in the studio together. Vitamin D and Jake are two cats I’ve known for years. We grew up and threw up on the same boom bap scene. I’ve already begun grindin’ through radio for fans and Hip Hop heads alike to bang out to. Stay tuned to my web site www.FleetaPartee.com and my YouTube page where the video for “The City”, “Inception” and other behind the scenes of Partee Life is poppin off. Other than that, we just goin’ forty norty writing, shooting videos and getting the name reaquianted out there for people to feel and support!
Previous work that we should know about:
My previous work was with a crew out of Seattle called Shabazz Coalition. I liken the squad to a Seattle Wu Tang; many different emcees with different styles and different flows coming together under one umbrella. After that, I co-founded (and named) SportNLife Records, a company out of Seattle that houses acts such as Fatal Lucciano, Fly Moon Royalty, and Spac3Man. I walked away from that situation, but still interact creatively and socially with the owner and a couple of the acts. Back then I was Big Partee and with Shabazz, just plain ol’ Partee. Both crews were influential in shaping the Seattle Hip Hop scene as a whole.
If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?
If I had to pick one song that defined my career it would be “My Life” by Styles P and Pharoahe Monch. the chorus in that song describes an emcee’s life in general to a certain degree. After all the fame chasin’ (for some), hand clappin’, business and shinin’… at the end of the day it’s just a man/woman and their music. Raw and real… yeah, that’s my joint.

If you weren’t doing music, what would you be doing?
If I wasn’t doin’ music, honestly I’d be involved in business management, artist consultation and artist commissioning… or something in the lane of mentoring and advocating for at risk/troubled youth. Many younger kids become enamored with the streets simply due to the fact that there are no male figures in their life to guide them in a more positive direction; someone who’s been through the hustler’s lifestyle to let them know, “hey, what glitters isn’t necessarily gold”. So things like that, which require daily grinding and a journey… I’m addicted to movin’ and shakin’, setting goals and workin’ daily to obtain and maintain them. The journey excites me!
Why should our readers give you a shot and listen to your music from here on out?
Your readers should listen to my music because it’s real. When I say that, I mean truly a piece of me and reflects on real things goin’ on in the streets and societies all over the world in general. Readers should listen because I display a good mixture of dope, witty wordplay while painting pictures that those who’ve experienced or know struggle can relate to. In America and worldwide, that majority have dealt with struggle in one form of another at some time in their life. The readers should stay tuned because I represent the culture of Hip Hop as a whole and not just a fame chasin’ emcee. I so this for the live, not for celebrity status or the latest reality show. You like raw Hip Hop with substance instead of gloss and glorification of greed and materiel wealth, then fuck with Fleeta Partee. I speak the truth! You wanna be lied to, go cope the next cat’s joint. I’m here to give it to ya raw!!
If you could only take one record on a deserted island with you, what album would that be?
If I could take one album on a deserted island, it’d probably be Nas’ Illmatic. Let’s ignore the fact that it’s one of the cultures’ greatest albums. When I heard that joint for the first time, I felt like someone finally spoke for my generaetion from the streets in an intelligent manner. it gave kids growing up or who grew up in the projects a sense of pride and helped explain our mindstate and environment to the world. Cats all over the nation wanted to see and explre “QueensBridge” when he dropped. With words he made an undesirable environment interesting and trendsetting… powerful music when a person makes poverty seem dope. So yeah, Nas’ Illmatic… that’s the bible!
Tell us one thing that very few people may know about you.
One thing people might not know about me is that I’m probably more diverse than I might come off. I speak from the streets without glorification, but interacted with all types of races and kids with different financial upbringings. So I got buddies in the financial sector out of New York, buddies in real estate, buddies with Masters degrees, buddies doing time for drugs and murder. I went through stages of being a skater when it wasn’t the trendy thing, to hangin’ on city blacks hustin’… very diverse… a man of many faces. It’s the Gemini in me. June 16th to be exact.
What’s next for you?
Droppin’ this EP and workin it… stayin’ recording for this next untitled EP… making available my line of t-shirts and other merchandise like lighters, buttons, stickers.. you name it, it’ll be there for Fleeta Partee listeners and Hip Hop heads alike! Too many moves to name… all I’mma say is stay tuned. This is just the beginning!!
Any shout outs or last words?
Yeah, I wanna shout out my fam, kids and the lovely Hollywood. I wanna thank the producers and emcees who helped with Life Muzik… Vitamin D, Jake One, Lord sith, DSane, CNote, Jon Moore, The Mayor of Seattle Hip Hop, Jerome Goldenschwartz, Greg Burke for knowledge and grindin with me… my higherpower for life and blessings, Wayman Earls who narrated Life Muzik and all who’ve supported since day one. - http://www.kevinnottingham.com

Fleeta Partee: Revolution Laced with Rhyme

He exemplifies the backbone of hip hop, integrating raw dog headbanging rhymes with revolution. A child of Black Panther Party members, Fleeta Partee was born and raised in Seattle’s Central District, where he survived the trials and tribulations of daily street life. The emcee tells stories with no glorification or sensation, with a foundation upon hip hop history and culture.

Fleeta uses his voice to transcend region in his rhymes, blending Seattle slang with the East Coast flow of NY rap legends Rakim, Sadat X, Nas, and AZ. Growing up in the era of the East Coast- West Coast battle, he blended both mind states. An alumn of Garfield High, home to Quincy Jones, Bruce Lee, and Jimi Hendrix, the lyricist known as Fleeta Partee desires to take his music to a global level, while remaining faithful to the integrity of hip hop culture.

Fleeta’s first record, in 1993, was a collaboration with DJ Sean Malik called “Female Mentality.” Before his solo career, the rhymer was one of many talents in the Shabazz Coalition, the Wu-Tang of the Northwest and was a founding member of Sportinlife Entertainment. Fleeta maintains his hometown connection, working with Seattle producers Vitamin D and Jake One on his upcoming album, as well as on his EP. LifeMuzik, the 7-track extended play, will also feature producers C-Note and Lord Sith. The leadoff single called “The City,” has the voice of expression that hip hop heads fiend, an enticing study of society told over heavy, Vitamin-D drums. Fleeta Partee’s hunger and focus is built upon knowledge and truth, and can be described best from the words of the man himself.

“THIS IS HIP HOP.”
