Biography

As Flickershow, Julian Sark and Eli McIlveen have been winning over Toronto audiences with their soaring harmonies and smart lyrics for close to five years. With influences such as the Trash Can Sinatras, Elvis Costello and Belle & Sebastian, their music combines heartfelt songwriting with charming, memorable pop.

Having met in high school, they reunited under the Flickershow banner in 1999. Since then they've penned dozens of original tunes, honing their songcraft and arrangements in the process, and played at various venues around Toronto. Added in 2004, drummer Clark Allore (The Shoeflies, Janus) is the newest member of the Flickershow cast.

Flickershow's debut CD "Stars For Searchlights" was released in 2003, and another is in the works for 2005.

Still Life

Written By: Julian Sark

still life

table pushed under an old oak tree
paper stars strung from each bough of green
roses and incense, shoreline and sunset
ladder and two chairs

places laid: silverware, tinted glass
wooden bowls, napkins in scarlet bands
woebegone gull cries, breakers and blue skies
candle and two chairs

now, this may sound naive, but I used to believe that solitude was wealth
i've since traded that tune for a table, balloons; bid reticence farewell

table pushed under an old oak tree
paper stars strung from each bough of green
roses and incense, shoreline and sunset
ladder and two chairs

Erratic Satellite Aphrodite

Written By: Julian Sark

she arrives like eventide with the morning in her eyes
she is dressed in midnight lit by starlight neon sign bright
she comes on like evensong lovely as the day is long
like a glass of champagne wearing lipstain drenched in summer rain

for one sip of her lips i would give all of my worldly possessions
for just one kiss

record gets into a groove heavy tremors shake the room
little aphrodite sets so wild she kicks off her shoes
i'm in orbit at her side an erratic satellite
no telemetry her gravity it cannot be denied

for one sip of her lips i would give all of my worldly possessions
for just one kiss

in a film
suddenly i feel i'm cast
in a film
maybe then i'd have a chance
in a film romance

i imagine we both meet in the lane where lovers leap
but when i've seduced her the producer recuts the scene
then a slow song starts to play & she finally looks my way
it's a silent feature i'm struck speechless we just start to sway

for one sip of her lips i would give all of my worldly possessions
for just one kiss

Searchlights

Written By: Julian Sark

is there any one for me
says the girl across the way
is there any one for me
well what should i say
love her better than myself
only met her yesterday
love her better than myself
well what should I say

golly i sure do think you're lovely
do you mind do you think much of me
or have i taken stars for searchlights
noon for midnight grins for violins
missed a subtle signal
mister single gets it wrong again

so i button up my lip
& i tighten up my jaw
so i button up my lip
& lock all the locks
but the truth is seeping out
out from underneath my skin
but the truth is seeping out
i can't keep it in

lately i've been so sad & lonely
maybe i need some major therapy
so i don't take these stars for searchlights
noon for midnight grins for violins
miss these subtle signals
mister single gets it wrong again

hole in my side six feet wide under the waterline
i think i'll sink

i can feel my body sing
there's an aching in my bones
i can feel my body sing
when i'm alone
it's the vigil of a saint
it's a joke that's wearing thin
it's the vigil of a saint
who's hungry for sin

baby i sure do think you're lovely
will you sigh will you make fun of me
will i die with these stars for searchlights
noon for midnight grins for violins
missing subtle signals
mister single gets it wrong again

how many drinks does it take to put on a brave face
we'll see won't we
