Hot on the heels of a successful performance at Cajun Attic, a live music nightspot in downtown Ottawa, local band Fliss has their sights set high as they anticipate the upcoming release of their debut album.
The six-song, all-original EP is set to hit the streets on Oct. 9, and will be celebrated with a CD release party at the Killaloe Lions Hall starting at 8 p.m. The party will have a $10 cover charge and will feature Fliss playing their increasingly well-known tunes as well as DJ MacDub spinning for the dance afterwards, expected to go well into the night.
Local musician and producer Schroeder helped out with the recording of the CD, which actually featured none of the current band members except for lead singer and songwriter Felicity DeCarle, who occasionally performs as a soloist under the Fliss moniker. Recorded over months during the spring and summer of 2010 at Schroeder's home studio and the now lamentably defunct Earthship facility of Errol Francis, the album showcases a few of DeCarle's 20 original songs.
The latest incarnation of Fliss as a touring band consists of DeCarle herself on lead vocals and guitar, along with fellow Madawaska Valley District High School students Shamisa Schroeder on keyboard, Cassidy Peplinskie on bass and Miranda Voldock on drums.
DeCarle and Schroeder had played together before, and various other connections led the pair to join forces with Voldock and Peplinskie to form the band as it's known now.
In a region abundant with musical talent, Fliss is quickly rising to the top tier of musicians, and taking ever-quickening steps toward increasing reknown.
On Oct. 8, the day before their Killaloe CD-release party, the girls will be in Pembroke performing at the famous Café Olé, one of the city's most popular live music venues, as part of Ecopalooza, a two-day musical event featuring local artists aimed at raising awareness of a variety of environmental issues.
Also on the horizon for the ladies of Fliss is a music video for their song I Was on Fire, shot with the help of local filmmaker Peter Hayden at his family farm, and an appearance on Daytime Ottawa, date and time to be announced. - Barry's Bay This Week

Felicity DeCarle started out playing and singing her songs on her own around her small-town area in the Madawaska Valley, with occasional accompaniment on keyboard from her uncle, Schroeder Nordholt.
Schroeder also produced her first EP titled "Fliss", featuring 6 of her original songs and one remix by DJ Cognizance.
Shamisa Schroeder, Miranda Voldock, and Cassidy Peplinskie all came onto the scene when Felicity began looking to start a band. They are all from the same high school, Felicity and Shamisa in Grade 12, and Miranda and Cassidy in Grade 11.
Playing all original material written by Felicity DeCarle, they are "Fliss". And they are a band. And they enjoy rocking peoples' socks off.
