The following is a review from Seattle's most famous music/art newspaper The Stranger:
Known as Hogan's Alley before a June name change, Flood the Void combine metallic technicality with colossal hooks and tuneful (but not wussy) vocals. It's an attractive compromise for people who appreciate heavy riffs and dual-guitar harmonies but can't tolerate gruff shouts, as well as for Foo Fighters fans who find their heroes ingratiating but wish they'd provide more headbanging fodder. On the Seattle-based band's self-titled EP, released this summer, singer Brian Fleischman sustains a clarion delivery without sacrificing intensity, and drummer Spencer Boyer embellishes his rhythms with progressive flourishes. Both of these traits recall Tool, but Flood the Void diverge from modern metal's most influential implement in terms of bass and guitar approaches (chugging and atmospheric shimmering instead of oblique patterns). Growing up in the shadows of the city that spawned rock and roll gods bode well for Seattle rock quartet Flood the Void. Formed by Matt Boyer (guitar), Brian Fleischman (vocals, guitar), and Steve Quist (bass guitar), the band began their musical conquest when they found their current drummer, Spencer Boyer, in 2003. After three years working with a self-titled EP under the former name "Hogans Alley" recorded in June 2003 (Producer Joe Reineke, Orbit Audio), the band was anxious to get into the studio and record a newly invigorated sound that had developed while sharpening their skills at some of Seattleâs premier venues (The Showbox, El Corazon, Studio 7, The Old Firehouse, outside of Seattle they have played House of Blues Anaheim and San Diego and just recently completed a small tour across the US.
In the summer of 2006, their trip to London Bridge studio in Seattle yielded a self-titled EP, recorded, mixed, and mastered by acclaimed producer and engineer Jonathan Plum (Alice in Chains, Blind Melon, Pearl Jam). The EP features 5 songs, including the aggressive, catchy single "Behind the Veil", along with the spooky and moving epic "Black Moon". Thousands of fans of a broad range of music, from Incubus, to Radiohead, to System of a Down, are beginning to discover what Flood the Void has to offer the future of the music world. Their dynamic and forceful instrumentalist displayed on the EP combined with Brianâs smooth and soaring vocals, and Spencer's position as the timekeeper with his professional attitude, rhythmic skills and talent they are quickly building a fan base that transcends genre boundaries.
On a side note, in the summer of 2005, Matt and Brian began to work on a remix of the Nine Inch Nails single "Only", integrating their own guitar and baselines with hopes of winning a contest put on by NIN frontman Trent Reznor and Seattleâs 107.7 The End. Their version of "Only" became the winner receiving 92% of listener votes. Their work earned them a trip backstage to meet Trent and free seats at the show.
Now with five years of experience, and their first cross-country tour under their belts, Flood the Void is readying itself for the next level. Since the self-release of The Kids On the Hill EP in 2002, the group has grown from an ambitious garage band learning the ropes into a determined team of savvy songwriters and performers, destined for success. Comments on their promising potential are quickly being replaced by raves of a completely sophisticated, edgy, and catchy sound. Often described by fans as Seattle's best-kept secret, Flood the Void may not be a secret for too much longer. With past show dates at several House of Blues venues, they aim to give music lovers outside of the Northwest a taste of their sound before embarking on their next U.S. tour in November 2006. The unsigned four-piece is keeping its eyes open for a record label that shares its views on music and success.
