Still working on that hot first release.

Flor y Canto is an artistic ensemble, born from the need and a desire to spread the beautiful sounds of the folk mexican music and the joyful colors of our traditions, however, we are ready to take you into an amazing journey through the folkloric richness of our Latin America. The group formed in November of 2014 in the city of Raleigh, NC, with three members and only three musical instruments. The group was originally a temporary creation, planning to participate in a single cultural event to demonstrate some typical dances and songs of the state of Guerrero, Mexico. To their surprise, a few days later, they were invited to one more event, and then another, and it was soon evident to the group members that Flor and Canto was here to stay. Today, their project has a clear purpose: to spread the traditional music and regional dances that had not yet managed to cross beyond Mexico’s borders. To achieve that mission, the band today uses as many traditional instruments as possible in addition to integrating attire inspired by the different cultures of Guerrero, which are designed and made by hand by some members of Flor y Canto.

The band has had a unique evolution: every time they acquire a new musical instrument, it becomes a learning experience, since none of the members knows how to play it. The band members study not only the techniques of playing and the different chords of each instrument, but also each instrument’s origins and interesting details about the instruments. Of the six people who are currently members of the group, only one had experience interpreting some styles of traditional music, another only played the guitar, and the remaining four, when they first joined the project, had no experience playing any musical instrument, however motivated by their desire to share this music from their culture, each band member now plays two or more instruments.

Another of the challenges the band faced is the impossibility of obtaining certain instruments, either because of cost, weight, size, or availability. That is why Flor y Canto has taken to the task of making their own musical instruments.

For a long time, Flor y Canto lost its dancers, so they have recently begun to integrate a pair of giant puppet dancers to maintain the dance element of their presentations in a new and creative way. The puppets are Flor Altamirano and Pancho Morán.

At the moment Flor y Canto is planning to record their first CD to help to spread this music to a broader audience. Of course, making a high quality recording project is not a cheap undertaking. To fund their project, Flor y Canto has begun creating some hand-crafted pieces made by the band members, which they will sell at their performances and use the proceeds toward funding their recording project. We are Flor y Canto: Poetry in movement!
