Helsinki based trio Flute of Shame is made up of Koop Arponen, James Lascelles and Dane Stefaniuk who all met in 2005 whilst studying music in Scarborough, England. They spent three years busking and playing in pubs to help pay for their studies. After graduating in 2008 Koop moved to Finland and won Finnish Idols earning him a deal with Sony Music Finland. James continued performing with his progressive rock band Cassini whilst Dane joined the Royal Marines. Then in 2010 Koop asked Dane and James to sing backing vocals on his second album called 'Bright Lights'. Subsequently Koop went back to England to persuade Dane and James to come back with him to Finland and reform their band... and so Flute of Shame began! Their music is a combined influence of Mumford & Sons, Frank Turner and The Beatles with the harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel. After gigging as an unsigned trio for a year the trio entered the international music contest in Latvia called New Wave. Here they represented Finland and performed in front of over 100 million TV viewers. Here they won the Alla Pugacheva 'Golden Star' prize for 'Best Original Song' and 'Best Band'. Since then the trio have performed at the private functions for NHL players, Audi, Nordea, The Voice of Finland and last year even travelled to Russia to play at an event organised by Vladimir Putin himself. The band have had extensive exposure in Finland and in 2012 lead singer Koop travelled to Congo with MTV3 to film 'Idols Tekee Hyvaa', which created awareness and funding for the charity Kirkon Ulkomaanapu. Flute of Shame were the closing act to perform on the televised show and were the only act on the bill to be unsigned. As well as touring Finland, the band have played in Estonia, Russia, Latvia, Spain and last year played at the legendary 100 Club on Oxford Street, London. They successfully sold more tickets for the show than the headlining act and left the promoters requesting more future bookings.
