Fly Upright Kite is a Boston-based indie rock quartet who blends guitar effect textures with plotted vocals and driving rhythms to establish a layered musical landscape. Combining the delicate sound of the violin with the power of a rock band, Fly Upright Kite creates an entirely unique sound.

Biography

In a music scene that is becoming more reliant on digital promotion and dominated by online music sites and services, some degree of the sincerity found in music seems to be fading. Boston's indie group Fly Upright Kite is a project whose aim is to preserve this sincerity by crafting music and a performance which is as much an emotional experience as it is a musical one. Fly Upright Kite's dynamic blend of indie rock resonates deeply with every listener and viewer. Imagine the melodic sincerity and grace of artists like Copeland and Jeremy Enigk hitting you with the epic power of bands such as Circa Survive and Sigur Ros. This is the sound of Fly Upright Kite.

In 2005, Asad Rahman (Lead Vocals, Guitar) met Liam McCormack (Bass) and Jarred Grant (Drums) while attending college in Boston. Holland Dieringer (Violin), also studying in town, brought the textural complexities of the violin to a rock band setting and thus completed the band's line up.

In April of 2006 the band released "Every Breathing Moment", their highly anticipated debut EP. Engineered and mixed by Kenny Lewis (Stryper, Journey), this promising collection of 5 songs has won over fans across the nation. Fly Upright Kite's "Every Breathing Moment" disc has also brought them the attention of the popular music website AbsolutePunk.net, who in 2006 credited their debut EP as one of the top 5 EPs of 2006. More recently, AbsolutePunk named Fly Upright Kite one of the "Absolute 100" - a list of top 100 up and coming bands of 2007. In addition, the EP's radio single, "Burn Out", is a favorite among local DJs and has received frequent airplay on popular regional radio stations WBCN, WXRV, and WFNX.

Fly Upright Kite has had the honor of sharing the stage with national touring bands The New Amsterdams, Umbrellas, Brandston, Lovedrug, As Tall As Lions, Owen, Anathalo, Moneen, and The Hush Sound. Through their textured yet accessible sound, the band is attracting new listeners to their dedicated fan base every day.

In April of 2009, Fly Upright Kite released their much anticipated "Weightless" EP, which was recorded by Mike Poorman (Hot Rod Circuit, The Receiving End of Sirens, Paulson) and mixed by Brian McTernan (Circa Survive, Moneen). Their new material exhibits a higher level of maturity and sonic complexity crafted into a sound that maintains the commanding honesty found in their earlier work. Having completed an initital east coast tour in support of the "Weightless" EP, Fly Upright Kite plans to spend much of 2009 on the road sharing their new material with audiences everywhere.

Burn Out

Written By: Asad Rahman

welcome my sweet heartache
what has brought you here?
to show me how you light up
And how you disappear?

I wont watch you burn out
Cause your beauty will never feel the same
I cannot stand to watch you wanting to change
What was wrong with what you were just yesterday
Theres nothing beautiful when your spark starts to fade

You could take me if you wanted
Take me anywhere
I would carry you
If need me there

Ooo I guess its my fault when I left myself wide open
Ooo its just your symphony that keeps playing through my head

I wont watch you burn out
Cause your beauty will never feel the same
I cannot stand to watch you wanting to change
What was wrong with what you were just yesterday
There's nothing beautiful when your spark starts to fade

Cracks

Written By: Asad Rahman/Liam McCormack

My fragile finger scrolls across your skin
We lay awake in darkness the silence setting in
Youre so close so close to breaking away

I searched the cracks in your breathing trying to figure out
If theres any room in healing in your strained desperate sound
But you could not show me
I need you to try
I need you to try

Pull yourself together dear before you fall apart
Hold on to yourself before your heart falls out of love

Never Let Go

Written By: Asad Rahman

If I would have known.
I would never have let you go,
I would never leave your heart cold.
You knew I could change
the very breathing moment if you asked me to
You didn't have to go while I was changing for you.

When you packed to leave
Your mind was already made.
I knew I could have made you understand
only if you gave me the chance.

if you want me here again
hold on to my heart that let you in
Cause we should never let go
Of what most can only dream

We could have worked it out
The differences that ripped us further apart
I would have done anything to get you to stay.
what were you after?
you were in a hurry to hide your soaked green eyes,
As you walked past me and straight out the front door.

Did you want me to ignore?
Every promise we made?
I know I'm inconsistent at my best,
promises break as you learn to forget.

if you want me here again
hold on to my heart that let you in
Cause we should never let go
Of what most can only dream

Say You Love Me

Written By: Asad Rahman

My back against the ground
Im looking up waiting to see if you are coming down
Im putting faith to test
Im letting go to see just where you will rest

so I'll drown in love, life me up above
until I fill clouds with doubt let them rain out.

So say you love me
And this is not ending
Or have I fallen without you

Love has dark corners
to hide all the lies in a room full of light
my stitched heart can not feel a shadow moving
everytime I put trust in your hands you break what I gave
please I'll make you believe

So say you love me
And this is not ending
Or have I fallen without you

Give me wings I need the wind
To lift we me up out of weathered skin
I can be loved to make things clear
I can be loved I need you here

So say you love me
And this is not ending
Or have I fallen without you

say you love me
and this is not ending or have these dark clouds broke open

Untitled #7

Written By: Asad RahmanlLiam McCormack

There have been times
Where you have lied
To get me to smile

You have said words
That have delayed tears
That could have been used to drown the love I have for you

Come get your things or let me throw them out
I cant live with them in the same house

There is no easy way to break a heart

Tell me its distance
Tell me Im worthless
Just give me a reason to hate the day we met

Ill lie to my close friends
Ill say that you're crazy
Ill say that we couldn't work
Please are trying to make me
Say I need you here
Cause I need you hear still

There is no easy way to break a heart
