Bio

folie adieu is a two-person band currently based in Wichita, KS, subscribing to a 'minimal is maximal' ethos. Established in late 2009, they released their eponymous EP in January 2011. folie adieu plays music described as sonic ambience. On record, the multi-layered guitars, 'out there' drums, and non-autotuned vocals provide a soundtrack for both mood and motion. folie adieu is Andrea Drongoski on guitars and vocals, and Brian Winters on drums.
Despite a 2010 resolution to just get a few live shows on their resume, folie adieu ended the year with having done a dozen shows, including well-received gigs at The Ghost Parlor in Manhattan, KS and The Record Bar in Kansas City, MO.
folie adieu envisions creating music as a way to live a life of significance. Andrea's father was a guitarist and she has been surrounded by music since a young child. “My father played one of his two dozen or so guitars every day for about three hours. I didn’t realize until years later just how much my father’s playing influenced me in my songwriting. I once ditched school to stay home and play my dad’s guitars.” Andrea studied vocal music in college, learned guitar and began songwriting, letting a simple philosophy of “it’s got to make people want to move” guide her. She attributes much of her style to 60's bands such as The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, and Velvet Underground and the dreampop/shoegaze movement of the 90's. Brian has long been fascinated by music (as well as literature - he is currently writing what he calls "a memoir-y type thing about an unrequited love affair with rock 'n' roll"). He admits an affinity for bands who articulate their sound with a less is more approach, admiring drummers such as (Echo & The Bunnymen's) Pete de Freitas and (Joy Division/New Order's) Steven Morris, both who exhibit "this really uncomplicated but powerful delivery. I could never get into this whole emphasis on a technique such as playing in 23/7 time or cramming as many fills in-between the four and one count. It's like putting a thrash metal solo in the middle of Silent Night."
Brian and Andrea look forward to creating more music. They are aware of the mercurial nature of the recording industry yet remain steadfast in their DIY sensibilities.
"As long as our Fostex holds out and Carter (Carter Green of GreenJeans Studios, who recorded their EP) stays in business, we'll always have music out there."
