"URB, best of 2005 issue for LEAF"

Intelligent without being pretentious, dark without being comic, Leaf picks up the rainy-night trip hop mantle last carried by DJs Shadow and Signify. Thankfully, he strays away from second rate emulation by overlooking traditional hip hop and delving into glitchy breaks, jungle-inspired sequencing, and a uniquely bleak ambience. - BPI

Folium grew out of the Leaf project, a 30+ member collaboration headed by Steve Wick and Eric Dove. In 2005 Wick and Eric Dove co-produced the first Leaf album, Rooted from Within. Hunter Holmes debuted violins on globally acclaimed track, Paper Dress and Amanda laid her crystalline vocals to several Leaf tracks. Hunter, Wick and Dove grew up together, in DFW, gleaning influences from Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop, Classical, Drum and Bass, Synthpop and anything in the dumpsters at record store parking lots. Wick and Dove extrapolate samples from those long lost discards into a new amalgamation of song. Then comes Amanda. Born into a large family of Texas singer/songwriters, Amanda pulls poetry from the aether and swaddles it in home grown melody. Classically trained violinist, Hunter, tempers the melodies with a 300 year old Stradivarius make-alike. The sound of Folium wraps tendrils around heart strings and gently, tugs as it grows. Folium is currently working on their debut album.
