"First Down Review by Andy Malcolm"

This is another one of those bands that I sort of have to declare a 'vested' interest in. I have been listening to the original versions of these songs for some time now, and hearing the final mix on CD instead of rascally Myspace with it's low bit-rates is a real pleasure. The demo opens up with "Dream Big", aptly showing off the bands talent for rumbling the bass and constructing low-key, downbeat songs that can fairly rattle along when you least expect it. Lindsay's distinctive vocals are what really takes this band to the next level for me. The almost monotonal drawl may put off some, but the style works superbly for this kind of music. Sonically it is somewhere near Rainer Maria but not exactly. The fat, warm bass is much more Evergreen-ish than you may be expecting, particularly on "Touchdown (Dance)", a slightly poppier effort that didn't catch my ear initially but now I have grown to enjoy. The other two songs here are ridiculously good considering they are the bands first recordings. "Catch the Spirit" twinkles into earshot with lovely echoe-ing vocals, the delightful bass and persistent ringing of the guitars combine with the wandering vocals for 4 minutes of awesomeness. This song and "First Down" would make a classy seven inch single together, "First Down" is probably my favourite song on the demo, racing off out of the blocks at quite some pace, keeping it up for the duration, swirling around with the vocals carrying the day. Such good stuff.

If you are into miserable, melodic emo styled music then Football, etc ought to be a favourite of yours right now. I suspect that the forthcoming LP will blow many of us away. Can't wait. - Collective Zine UK

"Football, etc. spotlight"

If you make it seems to be one of my favourite sites as of late, not only did it introduce me to the awesome Get Bent, but it seems to filling up with even more great music.

One of those new uploads is the Football, etc. demo which everyone seems to be currently going crazy over. And rightly they should be!

All the comments I read about it always suggest Rainer Maria comparisons, which do ring true in places (particularly the track “catch the spirit”), though I see it as a more poppy Jejune with a little PJ Harvey on the vocals.

Anyway, the demo is free to download with the offer of making a small contribution to the band via Paypal or a hard copy is available from the bands Myspace page.

It’s also going to be available from the extremely well stocked SNCL if you live in the UK.

Keep an eye out as they have a split with the amazing Empire! Empire! (I was a lonely estate) on the way soon! - Writing in Basic UK

"Early football, etc. spotlight on SAL"

Who? Football, etc.

Where are they from? Houston, TX

What do they sound like? The long-awaited band from ex-Tin Kitchen members features the talented Lindsay Minton back at the helm. The band has posted two songs on their myspace page here. The Rainer Maria comparisons continue to be entirely appropriate. “First Down” touches on Tin Kitchen’s brand of off-kilter emo/indie rock while “Catch The Spirit” lays back a bit in a more tempered fashion much like Minton’s solo material. No matter the approach, this is a beautiful start for the band.

"Press release - football, etc. signs to CYLS records"

Michigan’s Count Your Lucky Stars continues to flourish and expand their already impressive roster. Next on the signing block is Houston, TX indie / emo band, Football, etc.

Rainer Maria comparisons be damned, Football, etc. stand tall on their own merit. Rising from the ashes of the short-lived Tin Kitchen, the band’s no-nonsense approach to music is as refreshing as it is honest. The three piece continues to put the finishing touches on their first demo, cleverly titled, First Down. The EP will be released by the band in July.

Shortly after, Football, etc will share some vinyl in the form of a split seven-inch with CYLS flagship artist, Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) . Then it is on to writing and recording for their debut full-length that will of course come courtesy of Count Your Lucky Stars. - Bear Trap PR

Bio

Mercy Harper and Lindsay Minton moved to Houston in 2008 from New Brunswick, NJ, where they were once in the short-lived band Tin Kitchen. This band's demo was recorded by Rainer Maria's Kyle Fischer, and they embarked on a small tour of the Midwest and East Coast. Tin Kitchen gained notoriety among fans of 90s midwest emo soon after their demise. Mercy and Lindsay, after much trial and error, found Brandon Baker in early 2009 in Houston. He was hoping to join a math rock band, but he quickly found inspiration from the musical combination of Mercy and Lindsay. The songs came quick and the band's initial recordings received much attention from fans of Tin Kitchen and other neo-90s emo music. The band self-released a four-track demo in August 2009, which receives distribution in the UK through strictly no capital letters distro. The band was quickly snatched up by the Michigan-based label Count Your Lucky Stars Records. The band is currently trying to balance full-time jobs (teaching high school, attending graduate school, and working as a computer technician) with recording their upcoming full-length album.
