"Originally from Austin, singer-songwriter Andrew Ross moved to San Francisco and after months holed up writing music, linked up with band and house mates bassist Sergei Preobrazhensky and keyboardist Sam Dosick. The result; a laid back, sixties vibe that is anything but foreign to the local music scene.
With psychedelic, saturated visuals and a dreamy melody, it's easy to get lost in the band's new release." - DoTheBay
‘Don’t Hesitate’ begins with a melancholy charm, channeling some of the same understated, assured refrain also seen in similar artists such as Dralms and Slum Sociable.
A true ‘home-brewed’ band, Foreign formed in San Francisco, beginning within the modest confines of a basement studio. Their debut single ‘Don’t Hesitate’ has political sentiments, but at it’s heart is an ode to committing to change and not living within the status quo.
This concept is translated perfectly into not only Andrew Ross’s vocals, but also throughout their music. Their sound is unrushed and unapologetic – a true representation of their musical aspiration, which is something incredibly assured for their debut single. - HiddenHerd
In the second single from Foreign, a newly-formed San Francisco quintet helmed by singer-songwriter Andrew Ross, brooding guitars and shimmery, ’60s-esque melodies blend together for an overall moody, mid-tempo indie-pop song.
The subject of the track, says Ross who possesses a spiky falsetto, is a phenomenon called apophenia “in which people find connections and meaningfulness in unrelated things.” Though typically a visual and emotional experience, Ross believes it can also sonically when “the listener hears a clear pattern in what is such an unconventional progression.”
Ross penned the “unconventional” song while living in New York City during a snowstorm. Because he was trapped indoors all day, and had “nothing better to do,” he figured he’d write, which, he says, led to “what turned out to be a pretty strange song.”
Strangeness aside, “Apophenia,” which was produced by Dashiell Worfolk, is a solid track and a promising release from this new band. - SF Weekly
