"The Orchidales, Forest Tourist, Secret Hospital, Habitat, Such Mad Hope"

FOREST TOURIST Self-described “trash-pop” from the increasingly fertile Charleston, S.C., indie scene, this young quartet’s music is notable for its carnival-funhouse keys, fuzzed-out guitars, energetic tempos and singer Edward Burroughs’ half-slacker/half-crooner vocals (is that some Julian Casablancas I hear in there?). The lead single “Winnebago Dreams” off their new EP, Pop Reject, has been a show-topping anthem in the band’s hometown, and is well-worth a bandcamp.com visit; its extended bridge/outro also suggests there’s more to the songwriting than just “trash” or “pop.” Bright future? Quite possibly. (John Schacht) - Creative Loafing Charlotte

"New Music From Forest Tourist - Winnebago Dreams"

“Winnebago Dreams” is the first single off Forest Tourist’s upcoming EP Pop Reject set to drop in June. The new EP will be accompanied by a Southeastern tour with Atlanta band Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun.

For the past couple of weeks (years) I’ve been on music overload. Mediocre music clogs the newsfeeds, twitterfeeds, and our email accounts. Something new is here and gone in the blink of an eye. Something that is actually good is missed, covered in turn by a pile of rubbish that is someone playing an out of tune guitar in their bedroom into their mac and posting it on Bandcamp. The filters have worn thin you guys. The filters are covered in filth. And when our ears have grown tired, and the hum has grown loud, it keeps taking something more than special to crack the door and let the light in. Forest Tourist is the light. “Winnebago Dreams” with its’ catchy keyboard, unique vocals and well crafted structure stands above the excruciating minutia of music in the pre-20-teens.

Bio

Charleston, SC – Forest Tourist, the captivating South Carolina indie quartet will be releasing their second EP, Pop Reject, this summer.
In the summer of 2011, the initial meeting of Edward Burroughs (singer, guitarist) and Marco Frey (drummer) resulted in a frenetic period of production and fascination in each other’s creative backgrounds. The inspiration was invigorated from the dichotomy of their respective styles; Frey, a Jazz undergraduate at university, and Burroughs, a poetry major and avid songwriter, combined to produce a work that involved careful improvisation and a large emphasis on sound texture and recording technique. The result manifested into Forest Tourist dreamy self-titled EP that was well received and described by Free Times (Columbia’s Free Alternative Weekly) as, “shoegazy lushness… an extraterrestrial Washed Out, reaching for Deerhunter art-pop glory.”
In order to continue the project, both members brought in two other members that supported the same type of polarity, keyboardist Trey Cooper, jazz major, and bassist Kyle Brown, long-time collaborator with Burroughs. Pop Reject is the music that was created from the four during the fall of 2011 and reflects songs that are meant to be heard in the same way that they were manifested: with the immediacy of a live band.
The Charleston-based band has gained a significant fan base in their hometown since their first show in September 2011. Along with playing shows on average of four times a month in the city of Charleston, Forest Tourist has also traveled to play in Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC. The band is preparing to embark on a tour of the Southeast this summer to support Pop Reject.
