Biography

For the Mathematics is a five-piece rock band from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada whose music fuses dark Latin rhythms with intricate guitar work and an aggressive indie edge.

"We Impend" is the brand new EP from Ottawa, Ontario band For The Mathematics. After three years of writing, touring and recording, this new release marks the continued growth of a band bent on pushing its limitations.

"We Impend is much darker and more succinct than our first release," notes vocalist/ songwriter Robb Barnes. "I wanted to make an album that was as unlistenable as possible while still remaining within the confines of pop music."

Guitarist Clayton Fisher agrees. "we took the new science framework and modified it in every way, adding elements of indie music, dance music, dark latin grooves then we put bass feedback and breaking guitars into the mix."

"Throughout the record, however, the goal was the perfect 3 minute pop song," adds barnes. "there is some serious economy of form, especially with reference to our earlier stuff. you can hear the short-and-sweet aesthetic of bands like the rolling stones and death from above 1979 on this record."

In six songs, the band covers some wide ground. after the frantic "this transient," the band launches into the grainy and punchy "a versus." "apparatchik" borrows cues from angular dance-punk, while "meta" features a bridge resembling the strokes playing in a typhoon. after "term satiety" finds ftm at their most hyperactively technical, title-track "we impend" slows things down for a huge, positively epic finale.

We Impend comes on the heels of the unexpected success of the bands debut release, The New Science, which garnered international attention and praise, prompting a feature on the band as alternative presss june 05 "unsigned band of the month." Without any booking, distro or promotional assistance, for the mathematics has played well over 100 shows across Canada and the US, and has sold upwards of 1100 copies of the album. copies of tns have been sold across north america and overseas: in finland, norway, germany, the uk, new zealand and australia.

FTM was also selected for showcase slots for canadian music week (toronto), the motor city music conference (detroit), north by north-east (toronto), and the s.c.e.n.e. music festival (st. catharines).

The New Science charted at ..8 in canada on the earshot campus and community radio "loud" list, featured in exclaim! magazine. In its format at college radio stations, tns has charted at ..1 in ottawa (CHUO), ..1 in hamilton (CFMU), ..4 in st. catharines (CFBU), and ..7 in montreal (CJLO).

SIT BACK
AND FEEL THE SILENCE IN THE AIR
IF THE WORLD’S A THREAT
THERE’S A BEAUTY IN SURRENDERING
OUT
FROM BEYOND THE CONFINES OF YOUR CASE
THERE’S A BEAUTY IN SURRENDERING

AND IN FROM THE OUTSIDE
A COLLAPSE BRINGS THE NEWS
IN FROM THE OUTSIDE
AN EMERGENCY

JUST FEEL THE VOLUME OF THE AIR
IF THE WORLD’S A THREAT
THERE’S A BEAUTY IN SURRENDERING
THIS IS DESIGNED TO BE THE HARBINGER OF SOMETHING MORE

Deportation and Return

Written By: Robb Barnes

AT LEAST ON THE OUTSIDE
THERE’S A MARKET FOR THESE PAINFUL POSES
WRAPPED AROUND YOUR WORLD
AND WHEN WE’RE ON THE OUTSIDE
THERE’S A MARKET FORCE THAT’S SMOOTH AND SILENT
WRAPPED AROUND YOUR WORLD
AND IT’S CRYING FOR BUSINESS

I DON’T KNOW WHERE WE GET OFF
THE HOURS PASS THROUGH EMPTY DAYS
AND DAY IS NIGHT WHEN I REMEMBER THE VALUE OF THE AUTOMATIC

WHEN WE’RE ON THE OUTSIDE
THERE’S NO MARKET THAT’S NOT COLD
WRAPPED AROUND YOUR WORLD
AND IT’S CRYING FOR BUSINESS

I DON’T KNOW WHERE WE GET OFF
THE HOURS PASS THROUGH EMPTY DAYS
AND DAY IS NIGHT WHEN I REMEMBER THE VALUE OF THE AUTOMATIC
PLEASE COUNT BACK UNTIL THE DAYS WHEN WORDS WEREN’T CHEAP AND CALCULATIONS
FOUND A PLACE WHERE THEY WERE WANTED

EARTHBOUND SOUNDS STILL RINGING IN MY EAR
AND ONLY SEMI-AUDIBLE; TRAPPED BENEATH A DOWNPOUR
CUT IT

This Transient

Written By: Robb Barnes

From the moves
Of a subject versed in the finer points of every verbal edge
You could make a case
For the lull of standing still;
The comfort of these games without the cost

After a hint of submission moves the air, you're too tired to feign a reaction
Well, it's your move
(This is not how we should fall)

Out of sound
And sleep in a summer polluted and flooded by heat
Your words have too much edge
You make a case
For the lull of standing still;
The comfort of these games without the loss

I'll make my way through the lines
You squeeze these days through your time
This is not how we should fall

I want you to hurt the way I do

After a hint of submission moves the air
We find a thin resolution
(This is not how we should fall)
After a hint of submission moves the air, you're too tired to feign a reaction
