Bio

For the Mathematics is a five-piece rock band from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada whose music fuses dark Latin rhythms with intricate guitar work and an aggressive indie edge.

"We Impend" is the brand new EP from Ottawa, Ontario band For The Mathematics. After three years of writing, touring and recording, this new release marks the continued growth of a band bent on pushing its limitations.

"We Impend is much darker and more succinct than our first release," notes vocalist/ songwriter Robb Barnes. "I wanted to make an album that was as unlistenable as possible while still remaining within the confines of pop music."

Guitarist Clayton Fisher agrees. "we took the new science framework and modified it in every way, adding elements of indie music, dance music, dark latin grooves then we put bass feedback and breaking guitars into the mix."

"Throughout the record, however, the goal was the perfect 3 minute pop song," adds barnes. "there is some serious economy of form, especially with reference to our earlier stuff. you can hear the short-and-sweet aesthetic of bands like the rolling stones and death from above 1979 on this record."

In six songs, the band covers some wide ground. after the frantic "this transient," the band launches into the grainy and punchy "a versus." "apparatchik" borrows cues from angular dance-punk, while "meta" features a bridge resembling the strokes playing in a typhoon. after "term satiety" finds ftm at their most hyperactively technical, title-track "we impend" slows things down for a huge, positively epic finale.

We Impend comes on the heels of the unexpected success of the bands debut release, The New Science, which garnered international attention and praise, prompting a feature on the band as alternative presss june 05 "unsigned band of the month." Without any booking, distro or promotional assistance, for the mathematics has played well over 100 shows across Canada and the US, and has sold upwards of 1100 copies of the album. copies of tns have been sold across north america and overseas: in finland, norway, germany, the uk, new zealand and australia.

FTM was also selected for showcase slots for canadian music week (toronto), the motor city music conference (detroit), north by north-east (toronto), and the s.c.e.n.e. music festival (st. catharines).

The New Science charted at ..8 in canada on the earshot campus and community radio "loud" list, featured in exclaim! magazine. In its format at college radio stations, tns has charted at ..1 in ottawa (CHUO), ..1 in hamilton (CFMU), ..4 in st. catharines (CFBU), and ..7 in montreal (CJLO).
