F.O.X

Hey guys. I wanted to introduce you to a new electro pop band. They are called F.O.X. and they were created in January 2013. This is a female fronted electro group from Essex and the members are Mitzi Fox, Darren Barker and Patrick Monahan. They have released their debut album, Chimera, and were lucky enough to support Depeche Mode's The Delta Machine Tour back in May!!


I have listened to their album and got to say they are pretty good. You get 13 beautiful electro-pop songs that will keep you dancing and my favourite songs are: Black & Blue - a catchy and energetic song with a killer drumbeat where Mitzi's vocals shine bright!! Airspace for the synths and the catchy chorus. Heart Full Of Sharp Stone is the "ballad" off the album. It sounds something that Florence & The Machine would record but it still has that particular edge F.O.X. brings. I am a sucker for songs with a piano so there's no surprise why I LOVE this song. Show Emotion has a catchy electronic beat and I am sure it will please most people. I Sing We Sing is an anthemic track, perfect to end a set. It is catchy and with a carnival feel to it. Overall this is a solid and very good work of art for a first album. We can see what is their influence and I think the world needed a band like this. Proud, throbbing, and glorious. This is what the future tastes like. If you can’t feel slightly more energetic after swallowing a mouthful of F.O.X (pronounced F-O-X, not ‘fox’) then get out because I don’t want you near me. It’s sweeping, massive electro-pop that has attitude without tumbling into a pit of self-indulgence. Listening to it feels like you’ve been invited to the great disco on the Sun, and you shall dance on the stars until the grand supernova ends us all.

From 2008 to the beginning of 2013, all current members had been part of a larger band called Angry Vs The Bear and achieved considerable success. We wondered what it was like to switch identities after such a long time.

How difficult was it to start afresh under a new name after coming so far with a previous band?

It was a difficult decision to change the whole identity of the band and re-brand as something else. We knew we had a good following and had always done well under our former guise, so we were worried we would lose that. But at the same time we felt we couldn’t keep our previous name with only 3 of us continuing so we thought it was a good chance to do something new. Turns out to be the best decision we’ve ever made as 2013 has been our best year yet. In 6 months we have toured across the whole of the USA, released our debut album ‘Chimera’ and been on a stadium tour with Depeche Mode. We couldn’t have dreamt that things would have moved this quickly and been this much fun!

After forming from the ashes of Angry Vs The Bear about seven months ago, F.O.X have wasted very little time in their efforts to dominate the musical world. There have been stadium tours supporting Depeche Mode, reaching the final of Supajam's 2013 Benicassim competition, and also recording their debut album.



At it's core we have 13 white-hot servings of passionate Electro-Pop where F.O.X frequently capture precise moments of sheer ecstasy. But the reflective portions stand out, fearlessly stretching across a great vast nothingness like a voyage of the last great hedonists. This is shown in the mighty 'Guns & Horses' as well as their cover of White Lies' 'To Lose My Life'.

Mitzi Fox has the vocals of a beguiling carnival performer in the Pop-Stomp of 'I Sing We Sing', while also managing to sound fantastically desperate in the crescendo of 'Kill Me With Words & Pictures'. A highly dexterous amount of production from the rest of the band gives her some powerful and catchy sonic canvasses to work with.

Closing with the towering 'London Town', F.O.X give us a big drop and a frantic ride-out that could undoubtedly be stretched out to shatter the end of their live sets. As first album's go, this is pleasingly developed and demonstrates a ferocious confidence.

Before their headline gig I was able to interview F.O.X .Evolving from Angry vs The Bear in a previous musical existence they honed their musical talents for a few years including an American tour before things came to a natural conclusion when their drummer departed due to other commitments. With another visit to America imminent , the band remained as a 3 piece but went in a different more electronic direction which still incorporated live performance.F.O.X have now been together for 6 months. They decided to launch the band straight away with an album, instead of the more usual waiting around for ages before a release . This strategy paid off handsomely, resulting in another American tour before touring with Depeche Mode. Mitzi sent Dave a couple of demos which he liked. Mitzi then asked if F.O.X could support the tour and he agreed to put them on the shortlist.After a couple of months they heard that they had been chosen. The impact of this on their career worked on multiple levels, sharpening them up playing to 50,000 people, giving them experience and making them hungrier as well as making the band realise that all things are possible .Having done singles they were being asked for more and this 12 song album gives them more of an identity even though it was 4 years in the making followed by a production time of 6 months. I asked what advice they could give to new and upcoming bands so here goes.

Develop song writing and research what goes into what makes a good song. Write what you want to write. Mitzi writes the lyrics for F.O.X and they feel that as she is putting the songs across to an audience the lyrics have to be her ideas and observations..All the band is involved in the music . They work as a democracy; if two of them like a song but one doesn’t ,then the song is scrapped .This is also a form of quality control. Work with a good producer or get to understand production yourself. The more you write together the better you get.F.O.X have written together for 7 years so they know each other well.Care about songwriting, it has to be quality work that you believe .If happy with it, put it out. Learn to be your own manager and how to deal with things yourself. Gain knowledge of the industry. Work 24/ 7 on the business side and remember it’s hard work. Get to know where to get the information that you need. Hound people nicely to get shows. Decide if you need a record label. Find out how to get to the right people.p Have roles within the band.Above all, really believe in what you are doing. Music has to be the first priority. There won’t be enough time to hold down a full-time job and do everything necessary for the music so you have to take a massive life gamble. A lot of bands will probably give up at this point.You have to make choices which will be stressful. It is important to balance the books . F.O.X are lucky in that every tour has paid for itself but doesn’t put money into pockets because you will have to reinvest in the band. Although they spent a month in USA and toured stadiums in Europe and enjoyed it they just broke even. Believe that you make your own luck as it is when you slack off that things don’t work.The harder you work, the more things come about, so believe in Karma. F.O.X played at The Bull because they brought in bands on club nights in the past believing this to be healthy for the local music scene by sharing their following so consider doing the same.Be loyal to fans and share the good things that come your way. It is good to be friendly with other bands. Rock and emo bands have always been like this so follow their example. Always be nice to everyone you meet, again good Karma as you never know which band is going to break. Depeche gave F.O.X a chance when they could offer them nothing back so pass good fortune on to others. F.O.X had less than 10 gigs under their belt when Depeche Mode gave them a chance because they liked their music. Keep improving on what you have done. Don’t stand still because the industry moves so fast.Play as if you are in a stadium even if you have an audience of one.

On the way to The Soundhouse I was lucky enough to catch Vardo and The Boss on the main stage of The Bull.
This 5 piece band has two female vocalists.Light,clean and clear sounding tunes ,funky and rocky with a lot going on.’Better Days’ was the highlight of the set for me as it showed a change in style from the other songs offering a real energy in its opening and a slightly dramatic format.The rhythm section was particularly strong,enhanced by two fine female vocalists who delivered a varied set of mainly original material.

F.O.X were one of the highlights of the day. All class and charisma, it was easy to see why they had been chosen to support Depeche Mode on tour. Elements of TingTings are there but Mitzi’s voice is of all shades and styles, surrounded by shimmering walls of synth superb guitar work and and proof that talent mixed with persistence can take a band a long way.

F.O.X supporten Depeche Mode bei ersten fünf Europa-Konzerte

Die britische Band F.O.X wird Depeche Mode bei den ersten fünf Europa-Konzerten als Support Act begeiten. Das gaben die drei Musiker, die übrigens aus Essex stammen, am Freitag auf ihrer Facebook-Seite bekannt. Die Band gibt es in der jetzigen Formation erst seit Beginn des Jahres.

Zuvor hatten die Electro-Popper unter dem Namen Angry vs the Bear Musik gemacht. Dann verließ der Drummer die Band und die übrigen Musiker um die Frontfrau Mitzi beschlossen, unter dem Namen F.O.X weiter zu machen. Im Februar erschien ihr Debüt-Album “Chimera”. Weiter unten findet ihr einige Soundbeispiele.

F.O.X to support Depeche Mode




Colchester based electro pop trio, F.O.X (formerly Angry Vs The Bear), have been announced today as a support artist for the first five dates of Depeche Mode's European tour. The band, fresh from performing at American music showcase SXSW, released their debut album Chimera earlier this year and things are only set to get better for this earth-shatteringly awesome group.



F.O.X issued a statement earlier saying "We are so excited to be part of this amazing experience and have huge respect for Depeche Mode giving us the chance and believing in what we can do." Following on from my interview with the band last year, it's clear that this progression in their career is a reflection of their hard work and explosive approach to making music that really rocks. One thing is for sure - it is F.O.X's time.

The Trio from Essex FOX were officially selected for heating the audience before Depeche Mode group in the European countries included in this year's tour of the band, promoting their new album "Delta Machine".

Singer Mitzi: "I sent Dave a few demos when working on our debut album. I did not think there would be feedback, but he answered me and said he had liked them very much. Liaise, invited us to their concert at SXSW festival in Austin. There we met for the first time.

Previously, Dave told me that we have been included in the list of potential support for the band during their European tour".
The final decision would be taken later with the rest of the group.

"In the end all of Depeche Mode have voted for us and we will appear on the first five shows of their European tour. It is our great honor that we were invited by this very influential group and we still can not believe it. I have great respect for the group that gave us this opportunity and am grateful that they believe in what we do. Their new album "Delta Machine" is number one in the world right now, and Dave is one of the coolest people I've ever met. I really can not wait for us to get out of these huge stadiums to play in front of 40,000 people every night. This will be a new experience for us, but we are ready!", commented Mitzi.

Last week saw a string of new Depeche Mode Delta Machine Tour dates being added – mostly to the European Winter Leg – as well as a number of confirmed Support Act appointments for the majority of the tours’ first two legs.

In this post Modesa takes a look at what support is on offer for the first half of the European dates. In total (so far) seven different acts have been announced to support Mode in Europe, with a handful of dates yet to be confirmed. F.O.X

Just a few short months ago F.O.X were getting ready to release their debut album as a 4-piece band from Essex called Angry Versus The Bear. Then their drummer left the group for “personal reasons” and F.O.X was born with the remaining three members still in place.

A rapid rebranding later and Chimera the debut album 4 years in the making was released in late January under the F.O.X banner.

Foxy (sorry but she is, and I couldn’t resist) front woman Mitzi Fox carries the vocals for the bands’ big soaring electro-punk-pop tunes. With Patrick Monahan and Darren Barker in tow providing guitar, keyboards and sundry sounds the group have recently returned home after a successful tour of the US where they supported The Deer Tracks and performed independently at the SxSW Festival in Austin, Texas. (It’s rumoured that it was through their SxSW shows that they were noticed by the Mode people?)

Now that we know who F.O.X are, we can comfortably say that they are a great selection to open for DM next month. F.O.X are scheduled for 5 of the first 6 Delta Machine shows (excluding Tel Aviv).

Oh, and it’s pronounced phonetically as in Ef Oh Ex, not “fox” as in the animal.

tilllate.com: First of all, we want to congratulate you for your performance in Bucharest. How did you feel here in Romania? Did you enjoy the crowd?

F.O.X : The crowd was very kind to us and very receptive to our performance. We had heard that DM fans can be a tough crowd for support acts but we have not experienced that on this tour, and especially not in Bucharest. Hopefully it is a testament to the music that we are making. The general feedback that we have got from the fans we have met on the tour is that we are a good fit with DM - which is great to hear.

Romania was a fantastic experience for us, and Bucharest is a beautiful city - we will certainly be back very soon!


tilllate.com : You are a young and promising band, but what's the history of Mitzi, Darren and Patrick, before F.O.X was born?how did you meet and how did you decide you should start a band?

F.O.X : We have a long history actually, and our friendship goes back even further - which we believe is very important as we spend a huge amount of time together. This is actually the 3rd band we have been in together, so we have been working creatively together for the past 7 years, although F.O.X is the first time where it is just the three us - which feels great.

We only launched F.O.X in January this year, so it has all been a very fast journey - but one we are enjoying very much. We put a lot of energy into our debut album "Chimera", and it is a record that we are very proud of. It is very rewarding to see audiences on this scale enjoying the songs and hear positive feedback about our record.





tilllate.com : What are the artists you follow with interest these days?

F.O.X : As a band, our influences and tastes in music are quite diverse - we feel that is important if you are to create original sounding music.

The 3 of us are always looking for original sounds, good songwriting and music with character. We are very much looking forward to hearing the new White Lies album, Alt J have been a breath of fresh air and we really like the Lana Del Ray record - it is really haunting and atmospheric. Depeche Mode's new album, Delta Machine, is nothing short of a masterpiece. We are not just saying that because we are on this tour - we love that record. We think it will go down as one of their greatest.


tilllate.com : Is Depeche Mode an inspiring band for you? Tell us how your adventure for being the opening band in such an important tour commenced.

F.O.X : Absolutely! Depeche Mode essentially paved the way for bands like us. An electronic act, with genuine songs underneath, which transfers to a live environment - so without DM I am very sure the electronic synth pop scene today would look very different.

It is also hugely inspiring and motivating to experience. The passion of the fans, the professionalism of the team around them, and the band themselves - all executed on such a huge scale. It really is the ultimate of where you want to be when you first start a band - it makes you hungry when you experience it so close and makes you even more determined to reach that level.

When we were making our record, Mitzi sent some rough mixes to Dave Gahan. He came back with some really positive feedback on the music and it has all stemmed from there really. DM chose their own support acts and Dave put us forward as his choice, the whole band agreed and here we are! Dave, and all of Depeche, are wonderful people - it is a testament to them that they took such a new and relatively unknown act like us on their major stadium tour on the basis that they like the music we make. That's a very rare and unique situation, and one that we are hugely grateful for.


tilllate.com : We are sure it is not an easy mission to perform on a stadium. What are your secrets for getting past nervousness before going on stage?

F.O.X : I think a lot of it comes down to trust. We trust each other as musicians and performers, believe in each others ability and know that we are all well prepared and will not let each other down. Our first show on the tour was certainly the most nerve wracking. We were tense backstage but the moment we kicked into the first song, the nerves and anxiety instantly went away. From that point onwards it has been great, because it meant that we could really enjoy these special shows and take in as much of the atmosphere as possible. Its amazing how quickly you acclimatise to the size of the audience actually, it just starts to feel like the most natural thing in the world and it is only after you finish performing that you truly take in what you have just done and the sheer scale of these stadium shows.
