Biography

Francyl began working as a professional performer at the age of 15. She performs in venues from the Tacoma Dome to San Diego's Balboa Park, from Fanueil Hall in Boston to the Parliament of Wrold Religions in Melbourne, Australia. Her performances include music for audiences of all ages.

Francyl studied music at Sonoma State College in California, and later received a Paraprofessional Certificate of Training for the Kodaly music method. She taught elementary school music in the Berkeley, Albany and Alameda School Districts for five years. After taking a break to have twin daughters, she moved with her family to Seattle in 1989. She performed professionally in the Puget Sound area and continued studying music at Bellevue Community College.

Between the years of 1979 and 1996 she produced six album-length recordings of her own songs as well as works by others. Two of these recordings are for children, and all are available through her independent label, Streanomusic. She self-published "Speak, My Soul" a book of poetry with 37 of her song texts with beautifully descriptive folk-art cut-out illustrations by Robin Goodfellow.

Over the next 15 years she served as Music Director for Youth Theater Northwest, Children's Choir Director at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Bellevue, Saturday Service Music Director and Hand bell Choir Director at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church, Interim Music Director for Redeemer Lutheran Church, and Music Director for the Church of Mary Magdalene, a church for homeless women in Seattle. During her work with the Church of Mary Magdalene, she and nine of her choir members traveled to Washington D.C. to sing her song, "Carry The Witness, Honor The Dream" at the "March Against The Silence" in October of 1996. This march, from the Washington Monument, down the Mall to the Capitol Building, was organized to raise awareness about domestic violence in the US. "Carry the Witness, Honor the Dream" is the state anthem for the Washington Silent Witness Project.

Over the last two decades Francyl composed a large body of music for liturgical use for solo vocal/guitar, as well as adult choral works, children's choral works and congregational singing. Her "A Contemporary Requiem" was commissioned and performed at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church in November of 2000.

As a Board Member of Seattle Composer's Alliance, she worked with other members to educate area composers regarding opportunities to further their craft. Through the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program, she collaborated with other composers to produce three film scores. In 2000 she composed the film score for "Curro" with Allison Crook. Francyl and Allison were awarded the Nell Shipman Award for Technical Excellence in that score by Women In Film, Seattle Chapter. In 2002, she collaborated with 5 other composers to produce the film score for the documentary "Behind Barbed Wire" a deeply moving film about the experience of the Bainbridge Island Japanese community before, during and since WWII. In 2006, she collaborated with Penny Lovestedt, Steven Brush, and Tim Huling to compose the film score for "Henry Ward Elliott, Defender of the Fur Seals" a documentary dealing with the threatened extinction of the Northern Fur Seal population on the Pribilof Islands. This film is produced by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

For 5 years, as Music Specialist for Northwest Child Development Center, Francyl developed and taught her music curriculum for children, ages infant to 5 years old.
More recently she produced three CD's of her own compositions and other works. Pondpaddler's Fandango, a CD for children, "Love Songs of Heaven and Earth," "Songs My Father Taught Me," and "Peaceful Kingdom" are all available on her web site, www.francyl.com

Darlin' Moon

Written By: Francyl Gawryn

Darlin' moon, she does her job so well
Humble and shine reflecting light
Darlin' moon working hard, you can tell
Up in the sky she shines so bright
Remember the night when you set with the rising sun
I sat and watched you from my sleeping bag?
Sweet silver chariot carried across the sky,
Open my cosmic eye, spreading my wings to fly!

Darlin' moon, she's only half way there
Sparkling ladylike hemisphere
Darlin' moon, what secrets can you share
Unrevealed mysteries for my ear
And into the sea did you flee in your chariot
And I sat and watched you alone on the hill
Up from the east came the sun with his glory bright
Chasing way the night, setting my soul in flight!

Darlin' moon I'll see you later on
After the sun has run his race
Darlin' moon just like a child at play
Behind the skirts of night you hide your face
And yet in a while you'll smile at the setting sun
I'll sit and watch you come over the hill,
Shrouded in majesty, bright in tranquility,
Half in dark mystery, round like infinity!

Freezing in the Sun

Written By: Francyl Gawryn

I feel so strangely conflicted, part of me says "yes", part says "no."
It all used to be so much easier knowing just which way to go.
I had a clear cut direction, my life was driven and purposeful.
Now I wallow in indecision and I don't know, I just don't know.
Part of me really wants to, and part of me just doesn't even care.
Part of me shouts out for a voice and part of me just floats around in the air.
Part of me says "But I need this" and part of me just doesn't even feel the pain.
I'm freezin' in the sun, I'm burnin' in the rain.

Years gone by I knew my direction, life hurt so much I just had to get away
Now I'm living in this strange new promised land wondering, "What am I doing here, anyway?"
Part of me says I should write a song about it, part of me says, "oh, just go watch TV"
I'm melted in the shadows, I'm stranded on the plain
Freezin' in the sun, burnin' in the rain.

Before I had kids I had all the answers, if you just love enough, you can save the world.
Now, a mother, I find I'm a child again, trying so hard just to love my own girls.
Part of me shouts out from the rooftops, part of me sleeps underneath the seas.
I've struggled through my desert of misfortune, now I languish in this garden of ease.
I thought all I needed was deliverance and somehow that would ease all the pain.
Yet, I still hunger at the wedding feast, still standing thirsty knee deep in the rain.
I'm freezin' in the sun, burnin' in the rain.

Part of me murmurs softly in the night, so softly, I don't even hardly hear.
What with all this shouting and confusion, that still small voice yet speaks so very clear.
Yet I'm blind in my seeing, I'm dumb in my speech.
I'm lame in my striding, halt in my dancing.
And all that I seem to really know how to do is complain, simply complain,
"I'm freezin' in the sun, I'm burnin' in the rain."

Somebody Said A Prayer For Me

Written By: Francyl Gawryn

Today my troubles had me down
I found no comfort in my mind
All the answers I had found
Seemed to leave me way behind
I felt so awful and alone
Seems I'd lost my light upon the path
And I just couldn't get back home
When hope came flying in at last.
Somebody said a prayer for me
I feel a peace within my soul
Somebody said a prayer for me
I've never felt this good before
Somebody prayed that I'd be well
Somebody cared to send me strength
Somebody wants me to have faith
I'm feeling healed once again!

No matter who or where you are
Rich in your soul or filled with doubt
You're always closer to God's heart
When prayers for others fill your thoughts
So when you're feeling sad and blue
And you're not happy with yourself
There's something special you can do
Just say a prayer for someone else.
Somebody said a prayer for me
I feel a peace within my soul
Somebody said a prayer for me
I've never felt this good before
Somebody prayed that I'd be well
Somebody cared to send me strength
Somebody wants me to have faith
I'm feeling healed once again
Somebody wants me to have faith
I'm feeling healed once again!

Half a Ballad of Samuel Pearl

Written By: Francyl Gawryn

I found a day in the city
there were street cars and noon whistles blowing
Got lost in a house of 'Believe It or Not'
And a kiss on a Chinatown corner
After bread crumbs and black birds and a walk on the wharf
An old sea gently whispered the sway 'neath our feet
We shopped for the fine scent of far eastern flowers
Forgetting the charms of San Francisco.

We rode for a mile or more on a cable car
The bell rang in time to the afternoon's rhythm
And the people on the sidewalk all danced to the music
Of a colorful day by the bay.
With monks on the corner, 'Hari Krisna' the message
We chanted our way down Orient streets
And with chop sticks and tea cups and crepe paper dragons
We drank deep the charms of San Francisco

There's an old man who sits in Ghirardelli Square
And he plays violin day by day
His eyes tell a story of the lower east side
Where he stood on street corners and he played
His bow sings for pennies or nickles or dimes
Which your pockets might freely surrender
And his fingers dance lightly over the strings of his violin
Telling tales of San Francisco.

If you happen to meet him won't you mention my name
And tell him I'll see him again
Please listen closely to his violin
As he plays in the night all alone
And spare him the time and the change that you can
His violin is in need of new strings
Yet his music is golden, his music is pure
As a day in San Francisco.

In the Stillness

Written By: Francyl Gawryn

In the Stillness there is life
Though the chaos swarms around me
There is peace amid the strife
And your presence surrounds me
Like a gentle rain, bringing me home again
In the stillness.

In the stillness there is peace
Though the mind runs in confusion
And I only seek release
From the winning and the losing,
There you comfort me with your tranquility
In the stillness

In the stillness you are here
Blessings every single moment
Whispering so very near
Yet I didn't even know it
How you're there for me, calling quietly
Waiting patiently for me to be
In the stillness there with you
Any time of night or day
Your love comes smiling through
Though I wander and I lose my way
I'm never alone, nor far from home
In the stillness.

When Love Reigns Free

Written By: Francyl Gawryn

Oh, life is bitter and life is dear
It flows through peace and misery
Yet conquers death and loses fear
When love reigns free.

When love we crave for our reward
For service to the needy
When measure for measure we count the score
Our love dies speedily

For love that's taken as exchange
Is not love at all but barter
And did the need for our goods change
We'd find ourselves the looser.

I prayed "Dear God, please send me forth
To prove myself in battle
And show me worthy of your love
And wear your pride my mantle."

"My little child, sit still." 'Twas said.
"Still as the stars above you,
And rest a while right here instead
And simply let me love you.

For I'll not give my love to you
For all your deeds of duty,
Nor for your strength of truth proclaimed,
Nor for your gifts of beauty.

But for a simple humble heart.
But for the blessing of you.
I give my love for love alone,
So simply, let me love you."

Oh, life is bitter and life is dear
It flows through peace and misery
Yet conquers death and loses fear
When love reigns free.

I Overheard an Angel Praying

Written By: Francyl Gawryn

I overheard an angel praying
In the silence of the evening
Though I didn't see her there
I'm as sure as I can be

I overheard an angel's prayer
Mighty with a gentle passion
Brilliance with a touch of sadness
Joyous full and free!

I overheard an angel praying
Though the stillness pressed around me
And the noises that filled my ear
Were no celestial harmony

I overheard and angel pleading
Entrance to a rusty heart
Access to a weary soul,
License to set free

I overheard and angel's plea
And left before I'd recognized it
Later on I realized
Her prayer had been for me.

How Long is Forever?

Written By: Francyl Gawryn

Remember that day 'neath the pine trees?
It was a day much like this
We traded our vows and our wedding rings
And we sealed our hearts with a kiss
A kiss that will last forever
And who's to say that it won't?
'Cause nobody knows
How long is forever? Where does love really start?
Why do we ask questions? How big is God's heart?
How far do the stars go? How high can we fly
On the wings of an angel toward a brightening sky?

Remember our friends far away now
How we laughed and shared the same heart?
We swore our devotions together
And we never imagined we'd part
We thought it would last forever
And maybe it did
Cause nobody knows
How long is forever? Where does love really start?
Why do we ask questions? How big is God's heart?
How far do the stars go? How high can we fly
On the wings of an angel toward a brightening sky?

The scientists tell us 'cause they seem to know
The speed of a light beam and which way it goes
And how high the moon is and how deep the sea
But which one among them can measure the depth
Of the love that God put into you and in me?
They say it all began in explosion!
And who's to say they're wrong about this?
But I've got a whole different notion
That the Big Bang was really a kiss!
A kiss that will last forever
And who's to say that it won't,
'Cause nobody knows how long is forever?
Why do we ask questions anyway?
How far do the stars go? How high can we fly
On the wings of an angel toward a brightening sky?
How high can we fly now if love leads our way
With the grace of an angel toward a brightening day?
