VETERAN CHICAGO BLUES HARPIST FRANK RAVEN RELEASES NEW SOLO ALBUM, LUCKY CAT, ON HIS OWN RAVEN LABEL

With the release of his new CD Lucky Cat on his own Raven imprint, Frank Raven is staking a claim to his rightful place among Chicago’s veteran blues harmonica elite. Recorded with his longtime musical cohorts Jay O’Rourke (who tripled as producer and engineer) and Lee D’Budda manning the blistering guitars, the album is deeply rooted in traditional blues yet reverberates with a high-energy, slashing edge that’s sure to entrance the blues-rock crowd.

Lucky Cat is a concept album lyrically. Its 10 original selections all have something to do with Lady Luck, or a lack thereof.

Raven had reason to feel unlucky when he began the project. His  longtime songwriting and performing partner Jim Desmond (Blue Watusis, Raven Desmond Songs) ,  front man for Frank’s previous outfit, the Lucky 3 Blues Band (O’Rourke was their guitarist), had suffered a serious heart attack in 2014, two songs into a set at Chicago’s City Winery. Desmond would never take the stage again, leaving Frank without his primary collaborator. The trio had released a pair of CDs on their own Lucky 3 imprint, 2014’s Howl! and the next year’s Blues Time, the latter issued after Desmond was stricken.

What better way for Raven to recharge his creative energies than by picking up his harmonica and cutting loose with a fresh set of tough, no-nonsense blues? “My Luck Done Changed,” “Mr. Blues,” and “I Wake Up Screamin’” position the uncommonly versatile Raven as a solo Chicago blues star in the making.

Lucky Cat is Raven ‘s most profound blues statement yet. Rest assured there’s more to come from the energetic harmonica wizard.  “I just want to keep on writing and recording and playing,” he says, which will come as great news for blues fans.
