Bio

Band leader Muruga Booker's musical bio goes back to the late 1950's when he played with the Detroit instrumental rock group the Low Rocks. In the 60's Muruga continued as both a drum soloist as well being the drummer in many bands including playing with Tim Hardin at the Woodstock Festival in '68.

During 1970's Muruga recorded with the likes of Weather Report, Al Kooper, The Rainbow Band, as well as working on his own music.

The 80's brought Muruga together with George Clinton when he became a life time P-Funk member, and also with Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia for the recording of the Grammy-nominated "Blues for the Rain Forest" which Muruga co-wrote with Merl Saunders.

More recently, Chesky Records released "Circle of Drums" featuring Baba Olatunji, Muruga, and Sikiru, and Qbico Records has released three LP's featuring Muruga the first of which "Free Funk" marked the first release by Free Funk and the latest "Bubble Waves" by the Muruga & Perry Robinson Dyad.

Free Funk was formed by Muruga in 2004 and includes Muruga, Shakti, Richard Smith, Ken Kozora, and Richie Shakin' Nagan. Living up to their name, the group offers an exciting and eclectic, funky sound with emphasis on musical freedom: the freedom of jazz and the heartbeat of funk. Depending on schedule and budget, they may be accompanied by guest artists, listed below.

Since Free Funk formed they have played many venues and festivals through the mid-west including opening for George Clinton and P-Funk in Columbus (Feb. 2008) and playing opposite the P-Funk & Mickey Hart at the Rhythmfest festival at Nelson Ledges in Ohio.
