"FLS "Dazzles" Steven's Tech in NJ!"

Saturday was punctuated by a free outdoor show on Palmer Lawn. The show featured [...] an improv Hip-Hop/R&B group, Freestyle Love Supreme, that dazzled with both their creative lyrics and vocal talent. [...] Freestyle Love Supreme took audience answers and created songs on the fly. The highlight of their show was inviting an audience member up to the stage and reliving her day in song, something that left the crowd going wild and putting a fitting ending on the evening.

"Aussies think FLS is "FANTASTIC!""

From the moment that Freestyle Love Supreme made their way through the audience and up onto stage with a microphone sound check and brief introduction, this group of five New Yorkers immediately captivated the diverse Melbourne audience with their sharp wit, tight rap, urban soul and thumping bass. After a successful international introduction at the Edinburgh Comedy Fringe Festival last August, the group have made their way to Melbourne for their first appearance at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Lead by MC Two Touch (Anthony Veneziale), the group of five artists perfectly complement each other with Lin-Man (Lin-Manuel Miranda) the groups fastest and sharpest rapper; C Jack (Chris Jackson) giving the group Soul; King Sherman (Bill Sherman) on keys and finally the amazing beat-boxer Shockwave (Chris Sullivan) who provides the show with an incredible array of beats and sound effects with his mouth and a microphone!

The general premise of the show is to have the audience shout-out single words, celebrities and news events which are then used as the basis for an instant freestyle rap. The speed and incredible collaboration the group displayed was nothing short of phenomenal, especially after the audience decided it was a good idea to try and trick them with obscure Australian words and politicians. Surprisingly, the group had clearly done some local research and were never obviously stumped.

One of the highlights was a soulful croon come heart thumping rap centred around the word “Dinosaur”. All three vocalists had a few seconds (as the beat was introduced by King Sherman and Shockwave) to come up with a story - starting with C Jack, who sang a melodic croon dedicated to a childhood toy he once owned, followed by a hard-hitting rap by Lin-Man complaining about how long it took in the King Kong movie for Kong to get to the Dinosaurs and finally a softer rap by Two Touch who was “Dying” and “Sore”. The three wound up the song together, in a beautiful mixture of urban soul and rap.

Freestyle Love Supreme attracted a diverse audience from little kids through to senior adults, and the content was fun, clever (and clean) enough to engage everyone. Nobody went home without big grins on their face. The show was fantastic, and eloquently summed up by the gentleman sitting next to me with “It is just so refreshing to see a show that isn’t stand up!”

"Freestyle Love Supreme"

***** (5/5 Stars)
These guys are great. Freestyle Love Supreme is an improvisational hip hop show presented by six young New Yorkers with minds like the sharpest of rapiers.

Their skill is in taking abstract words and concepts and instantly turning them into freestyle raps that sparkle with wit.

They really work as a team. MC is the fresh-faced Two-Touch who also devised the concept. He and Lin-Man are the rappers supreme. C-Jack has the sweet, melodic voice and Shockwave makes a great squirrel with his human percussion skills.

Add in two musicians and you have a close-knit team of six talented performers who dig each other out and keep things flowing.

Part of the fun is like that of watching a magician and working out how they do it. They do work to a number of formulae but even when you see through the odd trick, you can forgive them for their charm and verbal dexterity.

Mixing a movie starlet, a singer-songwriter and a year sounds like a recipe for disaster. For Freestyle Love Supreme it is an opportunity to excel. Even audience volunteer, Jane from Wales whose day was embarrassingly (she was) unexciting didn't faze the boys.

There cannot be too many comedy shows of this quality in Edinburgh. Apart from one overly-long set that gives the crew a break, the mix of hip hop and laughs is close to perfect. Go and see it.
