"Album Review: Frend, Rating: 4/5"

This ambient take on new wave and indie creates a vivid and imaginative soundscape for listeners. Released on Auckland label Matron Records, Frend have crafted an album with vocals that could be compared to Talking Heads and musical ramblings similar to that of Jakob.

Avant-garde sweetness takes you on a journey; tracks such as ‘Last Hour’ rock along consistently, where as ‘Penny’ will set you back, lounging on the hammock of youth. The vocals could do with some tonal change and variety and sometimes verge on monotonous, but they’re not without intent. A sparse five tracks inhabit the album (resulting in a run-time of just under 14 minutes), but perhaps this is simply a sampler to tickle your earbuds – fingers crossed that Frend keeps up the production values, and find themselves gaining some well deserved air time. - Groove Guide

"Frend EP"

By Amy Maclaine
As I first listened to this album, I knew there was something of the familiar about it. Despite all four members of Frend originating in different parts of the world (England, Brazil, Canada and the USA, to be precise), they have a very similar spirit and sound to kooky Kiwi rockers The Front Lawn – if TFL were around nowadays, that is. This debut EP is a combination of folk, rock and pop that is delightfully quirky and refreshing. All five tracks are catchy and captivating, making me wish for a full-length album. Frend is made up of Patrick Girard (drums), Ronaldo Lima (bass), songwriter Danny Moffat (vocals, guitar, bass) and Lucas Alfaro (piano, keyboard, BVs). The EP was recorded in Auckland by Alfaro, mastered at York Street tudios by Chris Winchcombe and released through Matron Records. Getting your hands on your own copy of this wonderfully whimsical debut is highly recommended. - NZ Musician
