Biography

We met at Cornell and formed in 2007 with Tim Sommers on drums, writing music and performing under the name "One Trick Pony". All of us have been playing music the better part of our lives. Our sound has always been a little bit all over the place--at the moment it has evolved to some combination of pop, alternative, new wave, and psychedelic. Our thing is writing songs, emulating bands we love and admire. Those have always included Wilco, Beach Boys, My Morning Jacket, Sly and the Family Stone... recently, Vampire Weekend and Pheonix have become HUGE for us. We have plans to be living and performing in Brooklyn by July

Lyrics

Clever

Written By: Joe Stevens

Are you clever, dyou endeavor?
To wear your music like a sweater,
Preordained, rare brand name, and it fits you?

Does someone else’s point bee line you?
Lift you up and then define you,
Categorize, advertise, and divert you?

I’m sick and tired of it
Of running circles just to prove that what I like is legit
I’m sick and tired of it
Of running circles just to prove that what I like is a
Fit for thee, fit for me, cause its perfect

Do you write for publications?
Air another’s revelations,
Luke warm s/round, middle ground, and in cursive?

What is music, how dyou use it?
Egos can be so abusive
Desperate roar, insecure, and atonal

Friend of Mine

Written By: Joe Stevens

I’m thinking that I’m, I’m really tired
I’m waking up, I’m getting wired
I’m giving, all my loving
Hungry on a Saturday, Brooklyn bagel come my way
You can pay go wait on line, I can call a friend of mine
Found a dollar that’s a sign, I can find a peace of mind

I’m finding that you, you’re really trying
Your making yours, I’m making mine
I’m loving, all my flooding
Talking on a Saturday, make a plan to go away
You can find a place online, I can call a friend of mine
There’s a point to summer time, I can find a peace of mind

Move, Just Move

Autumn is a funny time
Summer reverb, dimmer shine
Winter is a telling time,
Tests the mental state of mine
Spring, Jan opens up his garden and out runs May
But isn’t till the summer time,
Cleaner tone and brighter shine
Makes me want to crack a beer,
Garlic salt cilantro lime,
Days ending, that’s ok there’s another one coming

Interesting

Written By: Joe Stevens

I think I should take up reading
So I can have something to say
Shape my body, take karate
I think that I’ll start today

How can sitting solo on a sofa, drinking coffee,
Watching reruns wearing old clothes smoking cigarettes,
Make my life worth waking up for?

I think I should take up fishing
So I can have something to do
Collect postage stamps in binders,
Are hobbies interesting to you?

Callous my hands, not enough

Dick Around

Written By: Joe Stevens

And I hold my head up high

It’s a little late, I turn the light on
And then I dick around, again
More monodromy, no epiphany
And then I dick around, again

I hold my head up high,
And I wonder why

Little high little low, little high little low
And then I dick around, again
Little high little low, little high little low,
And then I dick around, again

Spells

Written By: Joe Stevens

Some are at home,
And many feel alone
Spells, spells, spells
Its an on off on off

After a fix,
This feeling is a hex
Spells, spells, spells
Me oh my oh

Where did you learn voodoo?

Toiling through
The trouble to undo
Spells, spells, spells,
Me oh my oh

First sight feeling, cannot undo

Respect You

Written By: Joe Stevens

I respect you so damn much
For sweeping me off my feet
And I owe my stupid luck
For only now beginning to see
And I owe you all my trust
And that is not a simple feat
And if listening to you’s a must
Then there’s only one thing I’m gonna need

If I don’t seem concentrated,
Or that I’m of your frame of mind
Then just say it, don’t spray it,
And you’ll earn mine

And a man can’t live in fear
That always to the gallows he’ll go
Just for speaking what’s on his mind
For letting his true colors show
And I owe you all my trust
And that is not a simple feat
And if listening to you’s a must
Then there’s only one thing I’m gonna need

Silly Mr. Sputty

Written By: Joe Stevens

Oh spudgy sputty, your thoughts are alive
We only wonder what goes on inside
A head so big as yours, your thoughts so sane of course
Smiles never lie, its proof of what you feel inside

I love to wonder—do you live a dream, as it seems?

Oh silly sputty, you must be so beat
You fell asleep now, right on the street
A gift from me to you, would be a friend anew
One hand on a coke, and one hand in his pocket

I love to wonder—do you live a dream, as it seems?

Oh spudgy sputty, you make me so sad
Where are the people, that you must have had?
Did they push you away? Did you know what to say,
Floating down a stream, and listless in a magazine?

I love to wonder—do you live a dream, as it seems?

Pickely

Written By: Joe Stevens/Matt Schmohl/Brendan McDonough

I’m tired of always making sense
Look at my eyes, I am spent
Organized, synchronized,
Boarded up, itinerized
Today is lent

Pickely, Pickely,
You love to take your time
And all your things are mine

You’re tired of always paying rent
Look at my eyes, I am spent
Organized, synchronized, boarded up itinerized
Today is lent

Pickely, Pickely
You love to take your time
And all your friends are mine

Thats Great, I Will, You Too

Written By: Joe Stevens

How are you doing
And how have you been
We haven’t spoken in god knows when
How was your break
And how was your fall
It occurs to me I didn’t seen you at all
And what are you up to
And what’s going down
I haven’t heard you, have you made a sound?
And how was your weekend
And what did you do
The other day I was wondering about you

And where are you schooling
And how does it go
I hear that in Ithaca you get lots of snow
And what are you learning
And what will you do
That’s funny I’m thinking of doing that too
and how was your summer
and how was your spring
Beautiful weather is so great a thing
and how did you make this
and what was the score
America don’t make anything anymore

Its good, That’s good
Its fine, you’re fine
That’s great, I will, You too

Lemon Lift

Written By: Joe Stevens

I don’t give a fuck what fancy pants thinks
Or what all the pretty ladies of the debutante think
I’ve got an incentive, to keep a peace of mind
Boil up some water and I shave some lemon rind

Lemon lift, lift me on up
I’ve been down, down on my luck

I don’t give a fuck what fancy pants speaks
And I sympathize with all the dull and melancholy freaks
I’ve got an incentive, to keep a peace of mind
Boil up some water and I shave some lemon rind
