"Riding The Wave of Success"

HEARING his new single on the radio for the first time was incredibly gratifying for City Beach guitarist and songwriter Andrew Knox.
A tinge of fear also crept over the 23-year-old as On My Own infiltrated the FM airwaves.

“It was actually pretty scary at first,” Andrew, of flourishing four-piece From the Dunes, revealed.

“And it sounds different on the radio than it does in person.

“Cracking a commercial station is really pleasing – it feels great to get some sort of reward from all the work we have put in. It’s so hard for new bands to get out there.”

Despite having tasted success, Andrew and the boys – all in their early 20s – are under no illusions of becoming overnight rock gods.

“We’ve all been playing music for so long and it feels like it has taken a lifetime to get to where we are now and we’re only beginning to get a hold of things,” the young artist said.

“The reality is, this is a hobby for us, as it is for most Australian musicians. I was reading an article recently discussing salaries of homegrown musos at the top of their game, which said that if you’re a band touring on a gold or platinum-selling album for two years, you’d only be making about $65,000 a year before tax.

“Playing and creating music is just something we enjoy and it’s even better when we get played on the radio. If the opportunity ever arose though, we’d have no hesitation in putting our lives on hold to try and make it big!”

Training in classical violin for most of his childhood, Andrew didn’t discover “proper” music until he hit his mid teens. Oxfordshire rock group Radiohead particularly struck a chord.

“Radiohead, especially the Kid A album, really changed my perspective on music,” he said.

“I connected with the instrumentalism that goes into its song writing – it’s very instrumental compared to most rock groups you hear these days.”

From the Dunes recently released its debut EP Gravity and takes its name from the members’ strong coastal connection and love for surfing.

Bio

From The Dunes is a 4 piece original rock act, born-and-raised in Perth WA.
Formed in early 2011 through a collaboration between school mates Mike Stirling (vocals & rhythm guitar) and Andrew Knox (lead guitar & backing vocals) with members of broken-up Perth band Lionel; Jack Adams (bass) and Alex Keil (drums). They exploded onto the Perth scene last year playing in the grand final of AmpFest 2012 at the Regal theatre and representing UWA at the National Campus Band Competition (WA) final.

Mike and Andrew are responsible for the basis of the bands song-writing and both come from different kettle of fish. Mike would probably cite Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) as his biggest influences, whilst Andrew draws his inspiration from Thom Yorke (Radiohead) and Frank Black (Pixies). The bands influences are quite diverse and it is difficult to liken the sound of From The Dunes to one particular group.

Their Explosive new EP "Gravity" was released on April 12th 2013 at The Rosemount Hotel.
Gravity is a 5-track EP that showcases the bands best work over the past twelve months. On recommendations from music industry veteran Rob Nassif (Gyroscope), the band recorded the EP at Fremantle's iconic Studio Couch with Matt Gio (Voltaire Twins) over December 2012/early 2013. Gravity was mastered by the kick arse engineers at Studios 301.
It kicks off with an explosive lead single "On My Own" that has recently been featured on several radio stations including 96FM, RTR FM, Coastal FM, Melbourne Southen FM. In its first week from release "On My Own" was announced number 11 on 96FM's WA Rock bands rocklist chart, up with bands like Birds of Tokyo, Gyroscope, Tame Impalla

In late 2013 the band will step back in the studio and record their second EP "White Line Fever" with producer Andy Lawson at Debaser Studio. For release in early 2014.
