"Could you have a collection of music that sounds more ‘now’?"

Could you have a collection of music that sounds more ‘now’? And that’s not meant in an eye-rolling ‘look at the scenesters’ kind of way. It’s simply meant. This EP constitutes complex electronica (which is Flying Lotus-esque in places) with haunting android-feline vocals, stuttering beats, stabbing synths – and pop. There are moments of beauty as well: ‘Tiny Numbers For An abstract Mind’ has an outer space serenity, which feels like a meeting with some entirely
pleasant aliens; beings that give you a nice massage after your interstellar trip. And trip you will.

"Kites will surely blow up one day, the signs are definitely there."

‘Kites will surely blow up one day, the signs are definitely there. A launch gig for this EP, promoted largely on word-of-mouth, saw more than 100 people turn up to Salford’s Sacred Trinity Chapel to take in a stunning performance featuring visuals hung high above the apse. ‘Mitochondria’ itself was only intended as a final emptying of the cupboard before work began on their debut LP, but the quality in the three tracks that make up the EP’s glitch-hop framework can’t be denied; juxtaposed with Alison Carney’s piercing vocals,
the result was a captivating document of ‘Kites year which will probably go down as their best one so far.

Bio

From the Kites of San Quentin were born out of a group of musician’s determination to do something truly unique. You have not heard or seen a band like this before. In its short life, From the Kites of San Quentin have been gathering momentum at a staggering rate. With one foot firmly planted in the glitch side of Electronica, and the other in the world of Future Dub & experimental Hip Hop, they are creating music that deserves the tag of ‘innovative.’ With influences ranging from the classic prog rock of Yes & Rush, to the more experimental hip hop sounds of some of today’s new breed of beat makers: Flying Lotus, Burial & Hudson Mohawke; they will not be pinned down or pigeonholed. Already drowning the Manchester scene in their bass heavy frequencies, From the Kites of San Quentin are a band that need to be experienced live.

Formed in February, the band has already had the privilege of playing Soundwave Croatia, In The City, Beatherder, Electric Picnic Festival, etc, and share stages with such diverse acts as 65 Days of Static, Mount Kimbie (HotFlush), Dub Trio (Ipecac Recordings); The Pan I Am (ex Larrikin Love), DJ Kid Kanevil (First Word / Stateless), Max Tundra (Warp / Domino) and Kayo Dot (Hydrahead Records), Ital Tek (Planet Mu), Sian Alice Group & Esben & the Witch.
