"Frugal Father"

Frugal Father is the alias of Yosemite, California native Mac Welch, who does not have kids. Previously of LA dream pop band StaG, Welch wrote the majority of his forthcoming 7-song EP while working as a roadie, recording in the tour van between driving duties, and singing in empty hotel rooms across 9 different countries in the span of roughly 6 months.Frugal Father’s initial output has been described as “lost somewhere between the confessional baritone of Matt Berninger’s work with the National and the glittering sonics of an LCD Soundsystem record” with a “charming mixture of lyrical hedonism and nihilism.” He has recently signed with our HUG Records imprint for the release of his debut “All You Get” EP, expected out in early 2014. - Hold Underground

"Frugal Father - "Threat to Narrative""

Yosemite/Denver dweller Mac Welch, a.k.a. Frugal Father, creates music that is at once tantalizingly familiar and like nothing you’ve ever heard before. Exhibit A: his new track “Threat to Narrative,” a tune that begins as a cool brooding groove with all the percussive trap-lite trappings that are becoming more and more popular outside of the rap community. But as soon as his unconventional lyrics are delivered in that deep half-yelp, half-howl that sounds as if it is filling a dark, vast cave with its resonance, you know that this guy isn’t taking cues from any predecessors. - Portals

"Frugal Father"

Today (June 15, 2014) is Father's Day.

So, just quickly, today's song is by Frugal Father, aka California-native Mac Welch.

Welch was previously in a dream pop band called StaG, and while touring as a roadie and driving the tour van, he managed to write enough song material to produce a 7-track song EP called All You Get (out now via Holy Underground).

You can check out the entire EP, streaming now on Soundcloud.

Father Frugal will be playing at this year's The Underground Music Showcase (UMS) in Denver on July 24-27. Blonde Redhead and Real Estate are some of the headliners.

Trivia: Welch has not fathered any children. - We Heart Music

"Introducing: Frugal Father"

With a tag line ‘I don’t have any kids.’ and a name as tongue in cheek as Frugal Father, it’s clear this Colorado musician has a sense of humour. From his two debut tracks, Red Headed Hipster and First Trim, his sound is purposefully hard to pin down, combining the raw emotion of Casiotone For The Painfully Alone with the ear for a melody that LCD Soundsystem perfected. Of the two, First Trim is the more measured number, almost like an electronic ballad for the 21st century blogger (NB. 20th century bloggers didn’t really exist, did they?). Check out his two debut tracks below, and keep up with Frugal goings on via Facebook. - Crack in the Road

Bio

Frugal Father is the alias of Yosemite, California native Mac Welch (no kids.) Previously of Los Angeles dream pop band StaG, Welch wrote the majority of his forthcoming 7-song EP All You Get while working as a roadie, recording in the tour van between driving duties, and singing in empty hotel rooms across 9 different countries in the span of roughly 6 months. Frugal Father’s initial output has been described as “lost somewhere between the confessional baritone of Matt Berninger’s work with the National and the glittering sonics of an LCD Soundsystem record” with a “charming mixture of lyrical hedonism and nihilism.”

Defying genre, Frugal Father's work blends elements of electronic, synth pop and indie rock. In fact, Welch shies away from labeling his music, saying instead that "...if I am going to ask someone what their band sounds like, I prefer asking them what kind of food their music would be."
