"True North EP Album Review"

Quite a while ago this talented five-piece pop-punk band from London, Ontario was featured as the artist of the week. Hopefully since then i’ve given them some new fans who went and had a listen to their EP “True North”. The four track album was released in April 2015 and recorded at The Overload Studio. It was engineered by Brandon Pero and Darren Mcgill and mastered by Greg Hatchette.

I started out listening to the first track Memory which is all in all a song about the good times. We all have some of those, right? This song reminds us that although life keeps going forward we have something to hold onto- our memories about the past. Although we “wish that things could stay the same just for now” they do change but it doesn’t mean they do not matter anymore, because we will always remember them. The second track Treading Water is also about events from a person’s past- but ones that they need to let go of. It is a relatable song for those who have had to end a relationship or had to let go of something they know is not right for them anymore. The song is an upbeat song with a deep message about letting go. The third track (the album’s namesake) True North is about perseverance. When people try and hold you back or when life tries to hold you back- you can be strong and get past it all. This song was personally inspiring to me and I felt it channelled pop-punk band A Day To Remember (not that that’s ever bad) but had its own original sound that is likely to capture the attention of many. The last track Bayview seems to be about getting something back you lost or losing oneself. It is tainted with themes of hope for a return of a person into one’s life and getting back who one used to be. It ends with a link to memories: “I remember on that summer day I met you” which again reminds us the importance of memories in our lives. Overall this album is filled with catchy relatable songs, written with passion and is an upbeat must listen. It reminds us that there are good and bad memories in life but how you let them shape your future is your choice. - Tas Fraser

Full Year is a pop-punk band of 5 friends that came together from all corners of Ontario. They share a mutual love of music and a flair for infusing styles and pushing the genre forward. They are influenced by great bands such as Seaway, The Wonder Years, Neck Deep, and Four Year Strong.  Currently based in London, Ontario, the group continues to create boundary pushing and energetic music that gives a colourful foundation to their undeniably relatable lyrics.  The band's goal is to bring forth fresh sounds and ideas into a genre where so much ground has already been covered.

Tyler Greig, Blaine Kuzemczak, Connor Grail, Simon Käärid and Ryne Strachan met in their first year of the Music Industry Arts program at Fanshawe College in 2014.  They quickly realized similar interests in music and formed Full Year.

Along with their first year studies, Full Year were able to write, record and release their first EP, “True North”, prior to finishing their year in April of 2015.  The EP has performed very well on Bandcamp, and through CD sales; some songs have even been picked up for compilation albums.

The band will be finishing their Music Industry Arts program at Fanshawe and will be graduating in April of 2016.  Along with writing new songs and performing shows, their plan is to tour in the Summer of 2016.  Stay tuned to see what Full Year has in store!
