"(WATCH) Jersey Rock Video of the Week: Funeral Students "80's Grunge""

CD Release Show Rocks The Brighton Bar in Long Branch Friday 2/23!

Funeral Students is a Rock trio from Waretown with a sound derived from a mixture of Grunge, Punk, Emo, Blues, and a dash of Funk. The group draws influence from Led Zeppelin, Tom Waits, and The Cure to create their own brand of Rock. Their goal is to “create a sound that leaves a listener with an experience.”

Funeral Students’ debut album “Ghost Ocean” is due out later this month. The disc features elements of 80’s Pop, Surf Rock, and “experimental sounds.” It is meant to be treated as an immersion experience, diving deep into what makes Funeral Students tick.

“Ghost Ocean” will be available at a CD Release Show at The Brighton Bar in Long Branch on Friday 2/23. Joining Funeral Students on the bill are Wynward, The Barrbarians, ShiwanKhan, and DigARevel. Doors are at 6:30 pm. It is an all ages show. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. More info on the facebook event page and at brightonbar.com.

The guys of Funeral Students (Charlie, Rob, and Ken) met me for an awesome photo shoot at Fort Hancock – a former United States Army fort with gun batteries and crumbling barrack homes still on site. The fort is located on Sandy Hook, the shoreline of my youth with multiple beaches that I still enjoy every summer. I was excited to show the guys around as they had never visited before.

As much as I love photographing bands, what I love even more is getting to know them and sharing laughs together. Charlie, Rob, and Ken were enthusiastic, positive, hilariously funny, and a true joy to be around! We took plenty of my favored “serious” shots, and I’m glad the guys threw in some silly poses as well because that’s totally who they are! I am so thrilled for Funeral Students this month in particular, as their new album, Ghost Ocean, is being released on February 23. Show your support by attending their album release show at Brighton Bar the same day with Wynward, The Barbarrians, and Shiwan Khan.

Thank you, Funeral Students, for spending a lovely (albiet cold!) afternoon in front of my camera! - Stars and Scars Magazine

Bio

From the small town of Waretown NJ, Funeral Students blends grunge, punk, blues, emo, and even a hint of funk, seamlessly to create a sound that leaves a listener with an experience.

Singer and Guitarist Charlie Buccola uses his blues vocal background to deliver powerful wails while his punk and grunge abilities on guitar to keep the riffs catchy with just the right amount of heavy, and a dash of pop. Rob Molinari on bass and backing vocals, combines catchy walking bass lines with his powerful voice, matching Charlie note for note adding for an even more impactful experience. Ken Jockel, a talented drummer with roots in metal and jazz never has an uninteresting hit, using complex symbol work, destructive double bass, and blinding but never overdone fills.

Many musicians will say that a three piece band separates the men from the boys, Funeral Students proves that with a sound that most would think is coming from an orchestra.
