"One of the most professional CDs produced in Colorado"

Review of Rise Above.
by Brian F. Johnson

Funkiphino’s newest effort may well be one of the most professional CDs produced in Colorado over the last few years. The Boulder-based funk outfit, which has always strived to up the ante of their presentation, be it live or in the studio, has crafted a near-flawless disc that not only showcases their talent, but also gives a nod to their inspirations. Beyond simply nodding to those inspirations, the band is also joined by some, including Francis "Rocco" Prestia and Stephen "Doc" Kupka of Tower of Power and members of the San Francisco Symphony and Opera. Ther" are also some local guests, including Hazel Miller, Yo Flaco!’s Neil McIntyre and members of Soul School. Funkiphino recorded the album in their hometown as well as in Los Angeles and at George Lucas’ legendary Skywalker Sound in Marin County, Calif.

The 12-song arrangement is the band’s second full release and it took some time to get it done, but it’s clear that the time spent was worth it. The band teamed up with Grammy-winning producer Matt Sandowski, who collaborated with band leader and keyboardist Chris Fischer. Airshow Mastering’s David Glasser mastered the album. This is not an album that should be played on crappy computer speakers. This piece yearns to be played on a big stereo with the listener stuffed into a sofa that will allow them to soak up the sound.

Notable Album Notes
"Only authentic and vintage keyboards and synthesizers were used on this album. Hammond B-3 Organ, Rhodes 73 Stage Piano, Hohner Clavinet D6, Yamaha C7 Grand Piano, Roland Juno 106, Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, ARP Odyssey, Mini Moog, & Oberheim TVS-1A."

Notable Tracks: I think I'm going to have a hard time finding my favorites on this disc for awhile. However, the ones that popped right out on first and second listens for me include:
#3 - I'll Be Waiting (Little Soul) -- there are moments in this song where Cathy Griffin's vocals and Jennifer Batten's guitar solo are seamlessly blended and inspiringly performed.
#8 - World Keeps Spinnin' -- waaaay old school disco, complete with swirling Leslie B-3 and Neil McIntyre (Yo, Flaco!) throwin' down rap the way it was once first done ... so long ago. This one really does bring back the "hustle."

Review: First & Second listen: This is an old school soul, funk, disco, r&b record, instantly bringing up memories of the seventies and artists like Chaka Kahn, Tower Of Power, Earth, Wind, & Fire and others, including touching nods to the wonderful arrangements of The Sound Of Philadelphia (TSOP) records. There's nothing ground breaking here, but there isn't intended to be. "Rise Above" is an extremely well crafted, well thought out, and well performed tribute to the icons and influences that created the original sound. The production is first rate, the best that money can buy .. and then some. This is easily my favorite new album of the new year and a way high standard to live up to. Funkiphino finally wins my heart as the best r&b/funk/soul band in the region ... and will surely make my year-end best of list with this record.
