Bio

Funk Shui's music combines thick bass with funky, shoot from the hips guitar blended with effortless melodic rock vocals. A delicious Rock-n- Roll, pop, and funk concoction.

Funk Shui released their debut album Dedicate recorded at the prestigious Stepbridge Studios in Santa Fe and mixed and produced by Grammy nominated engineer Tim Stroh in spring of 2006.

The Alibi called lead singer Marty York...one of the best rock singers Albuquerque has ever seen...and recruited Funk Shui to play for hundreds of local music lovers on the Coor's Light outdoor main stage for their 2005 Spring Crawl. Before the Crawl 94 Rock's morning show invited Chris and Marty to play a special live performance, as a preview of Funk Shui's sound for their listeners on April 22, 2005.

Funk Shui was concocted when singer Marty York met guitarist Chris Kill in a gentleman's club and Marty was grooving to then D.J. Chris' selection of Lenny Kravitz' "If You Can't Say No" on the house P.A. Chris and Marty struck up a conversation about Lenny's album and realized that they had a lot in common musically. Both realized they were songwriters looking for a chance to break through with their music. Chris and Marty started recording their songs on a 4-track recorder and from then the momentum started rolling along. Marty pulled bassist Kirk Clark out of retirement because he knew the project needed to hit the stage. Kirk had played with Marty on a prior project called "Landfill" which later became "Drift" and recorded a full length CD in 1995. The three guys looked around for drummers trying to recruit their favorites from already-established bands when a friend of Kirk's suggested her friend Kurt Oelsner which became the missing link. They have been playing ever since with their debut rehearsal together happening sometime in 2004. Marty is from Kansas City, Missouri. Chris hails from Deming, New Mexico with musical credentials from NW Texas State's music program. Kirk is originally from Hereford, Texas and attended Trinity University. Kurt Oelsner is from Albuquerque, New Mexico and has backboned bands "Saddle Sores" and "The Daddy O's". Make sure to catch one of Funk Shui's live shows if you like to hear an original twist to cover material, too. The sound and arrangements will always surprise the ear.
