Bio

Funkslaw, based out of Philadelphia, Pa is composed of singer- songwriter Tim McCollum, lead guitarist Michael Welsh, Bassist Geoff Hynes, multi-instrumentalist John McPeak and drummer Bill McNamara. After playing some local bars as a duo, lifelong friends McCollum and Hynes expanded, adding Welsh and McNamara. Soon after the core of Funkslaw was formed, they enlisted the services of industry and musical veteran John McPeak, who began coloring their sound with mandolin, harmonica and lap steel.
All of the members of Funkslaw have the common goal of producing original roots music that pays homage to their influences, including Uncle Tupelo, The Band, Bob Marley, Ryan Adams and the Grateful Dead. They move seamlessly through live sets that include tunes from folk and straight forward rock to trashy blues and reggae. Each member’s diverse set of influences is apparent in their repertoire. Funkslaw’s stripped down stage presence and sound allow the music to speak for itself and draw fans based on a common admiration for music worth listening to rather than extravagant effects and theatrics.
Hynes’ bass grooves highlighted by McNamara’s relaxed backbeat are the driving force that starts Funkslaw’s musical vehicle, followed by Welsh’s minimalist tones and clean, pure sounding riffs and lead. When McPeak paints his musical broad strokes with the harmonica or strings, it completes the marriage with McCollum’s introspective yet universally empathetic lyrics. The approach is holistic and the result is a dynamic musical journey steered by drunken harmonies.
Funkslaw has been crafting their sound for the past few years with monthly spots at Maggie O’neills in Drexel. They are now beginning to tap into the original music scene in Philadelphia and the surrounding area with upcoming shows at The Rusty Nail, The Bayou, and Connie’s Ric Rac and the Trocadero. Funkslaw’s growing fan base and their ability to please a diversity of musical interests will no doubt lead to their collaboration with Philadelphia’s finest original artists in a variety of venues.
