"Local Discs: Fur Bearing Animals"

"On this self-titled debut EP, Fur Bearing Animals bring some overseas club etiquette to Vancouver’s dance scene... the heady blend of electronics here kick their career off with a bang." -Gregory Adams - Georgia Straight

"It’s One Cool World"

"My favourite band of the evening was the Fur Bearing Animals, with an emphasis on highly danceable grooves in post-punk packaging. The crowd responded, and furiously so, on the spacious dance floor of the Biltmore, while guitarist, drummer, and keyboardist/programmer/electric violinist worked them into a frenzy. Too soon, they were finished, and the evening was concluded." - miss604.com

"Introducing... Fur Bearing Animals"

http://beyondrobson.com/music/2008/04/introducting_fur_bearing_animals/

That's a video for "Someway" by Fur Bearing Animals . For the past year, these guys have been floating around Vancouver (notably at the Knoll Aid 2.0 benefit-turned-arrest-fest) with their blend of guitar, turntables, violin, and synth. I first randomly saw them play at an open mic night on the UBC campus, and then went back for more when they performed at The Media Club a few weeks later. Fur Bearing Animals are made up of Andrew Clements and Michael Fraser - two musicians who combine their very different styles in a way that's original and that works. Listening to their stuff, it's like Michael's violin sings along to Andrew's voice, and together they groove to the guitar, beats, and synth. It works, and they're good.

If you like what you hear, and you're looking to check out something different on Tuesday night, come out and see them play at the Opus Hotel. Of all places! You get to see the guys perform on fresh territory, since Opus isn't exactly known for live shows. It's known for cameras in the washrooms, from which you can spy on those chilling at the lounge. If that's your thing, then the night really can't get any better.

Pssst! If you can't make it on Tuesday, but you'd still like to support the band, you can join their Facebook page, or put your connections to work by letting others know of their talent. The guys are going on a music-infused road-trip-thing down to California in May/June, so if you know of anyone who would be interested in having them play, contact the band by e-mailing furbearinganimals [at] gmail [dot] com.

Fur Bearing Animals play at the Opus Hotel on Tuesday, April 22nd. The show starts at 8 pm and is free. - http://www.beyondrobson.com/

"Real Live Action: Shindig #3"

'They won over the crowd with dance moves that can only be summed up as “wicked-awesome.”' - David Slenma

Bio

Much like a mink or a marten, we are northern scavengers who scour the land for inspiration and creative consciousness. To survive we stock pile electro beats, funky melodies and inspirational lyrics to songs that express the contrasts of our environment. Indigenous to Vancouver, B.C. we often find ourselves surrounded by the bliss of the mountains while submersed in the destitution of our city streets. We are a creative undertaking featuring the multi-instrumental stylings of Andrew Clements, DJ Redworm (Michael Fraser) and Trevor Grant. It's vintage guitars, 80's synth, electro beats and jazz violin combined to light up any dance floor. We are Fur Bearing Animals.

For the past year Fur Bearing Animals have been busy playing gigs, filling rooms and ruffling feathers. From playing controversial student protests at the University of British Columbia to performing at Oxfam's Music 4 Change, Fur Bearing Animals have found themselves in front of a variety of audiences while using their music to raise awareness and help make a difference. Constantly outspoken and involved in their community the band enjoyed playing at numerous events that exposed and promoted change within the socioeconomic contrasts of Vancouver's population. With the addition of Trevor Grant on drums and their success charting across Canadian independent radio stations the band is now poised to perform bigger venues and festival stages in 2009.
