If you're in a husband-and-wife music duo living in Cascade and not making the sound you really want, what do you do? If you're Tom and Sarah Smith, you have Carl Hamilton (he apprenticed under John Bolin) build you a guitar, change your name from Blacksmith to Furious Jones and move to Nashville, Tenn.
Tom is a classical guitar player, but when Sarah--originally from England--picked up drums about six years ago, they wanted to rock. Tom uses a pick on his new black-limba wood axe--called the Classical Smith--which allows him to get volume and sound without wearing through the body of his guitar. And the name change to Furious Jones not only stands out but better reflects the duo's attitude and Led Zeppelin-meets-Townes Van Zandt rock.
"We're both shy, but we're in our element on stage," Sarah said laughing. "We're reclusive exhibitionists."

When I first arrived, this band called Furious Jones was playing. I caught the last half of their material, and liked what I heard. Their sound could be best described as a fast paced, overdriven rock and punk meld. What was impressive was that they were only a 2-piece with a guitarist and drummer. Tom Smith’s vocals were pretty impressive and had a classic rock feel. Sarah Smith rocked some awesome beats, and gave the music a punk-like drive. Originating from the mountains of Idaho, Furious Jones is a dynamic rock two-piece that began forging their unique sound in 2005.
Tom has been playing guitar (mostly classical) for 25 years. At 17 he wrote a song that received radio airplay in Boise and for 10 years, during the 90’s, he played in a tight, fast, flamenco guitar duo called “The Kind”. As well as touring the West Coast, The Kind won first place and People’s Choice Award in a Washington singer/songwriter’s showcase and they successfully licensed one of their songs for use in Warren Miller’s “Fifty”.
Sarah had been playing drums for 6 months when her natural aptitude and rhythm inspired Tom to form the duo, which at that time they called, BlackSmith. They had already developed a close relationship since The Kind’s dissolution in “99 and they were excited to discover their connection transcended to the realm of live music. Only 7 months after Sarah first picked up the sticks they played their debut live show together, in a Boise downtown bar.
Since then the two have been traversing the challenging road to finding a multi-layered two-piece sound. Instrumental in discovering it was the creation of a custom, classical-electric guitar built to Tom’s unique specs. Born in 2009, the “Classical Smith” filled in any gaps of doubt the two might have had about needing a third member and under the name BlackSmith, the duo produced their first full-length album “Camel Clutch”. Under influences as diverse as early KOL, Townes Van Zandt, Modest Mouse and 90’s UK techno, the duo have continued to expand their repertoire of catchy, original songs. A second full-length album, under their new name, Furious Jones, is in the works and will be released later this year.
