Fust Releases Simultaneous Hip-Hop & Rock Albums

Dallas Band To Debut With Two LPs—One Rock, One Rap

“I’m a mixed kid—a ‘mutt’—so my heart has always been in two places at once. And it’s most evident in my passion for combining hip-hop and rock in a meaningful way.” Says singer/rapper Jon Banks, who is of Mexican and African-American descent. “From Biggie Smalls to the Pixies, it all affects me deeply. From Frank White to Frank Black.”

Fust recently released their twin debut albums, the acoustic/indie-rock LP Logic is Sound and the alternative hip-hop mixtape The Howards. Though the former features emotional harmonies, lo-fi folk ballads, and indie rock experimentation, the latter is its polar opposite being a sonically rich tapestry of old-school beats (with a modern twist), clever remixes and oddly insightful lyrics throughout.

These debut releases are significant in establishing the group from the onset as not only an indie rock band but as a hip-hop collective. Performances typically focus on combining both genres uniquely rather than always keeping them separate. Running themes in both genres’ songwriting include a focus on musical intricacy, sincerity and thought-provoking lyricism.

“Immediately after a couple cousins attempted to drown me at eight years old, I found myself writing my first poem. To this day, I don’t know why I was compelled to do that then; I’d never done it before.” Banks explains. “From there, it snowballed to short stories, novels, and plays before morphing into lyrics and songs. Storytelling is the common link throughout all of my work.”

Recent honors for the band include opening up for David Liebe Hart (of Tim & Eric/Adult Swim fame), being featured twice in the Dallas Morning News and performing live on WFAA television.  According to ReverbNation.com, the band has consistently remained within the top ten indie acts in Dallas for several years, peaking at #2.

Fust is comprised of drummer Miles Roan and vocalist/MC Jon Banks though they often utilize other musicians whilst recording and playing live. They’ve toured throughout Dallas/Fort Worth for years at venues such as House of Blues, RBC, The Green Elephant, Crown & Harp, Lola’s Saloon, Poor David’s Pub, Absinthe Lounge and countless others.

“These debut albums are a culmination of a lifetime’s worth of work,” Banks continues. “And yet we still have so much more to say. We couldn’t be more excited for how this music is being received but it’s mostly because the best is really yet to come.”
