THE CULTURE

It has been widely known that Toronto, Canada is one of the toughest places for any artist (locally or internationally known) to perform. The saying “if you can make it in Toronto, you can make it anywhere” is a direct result of a knowledgeable audience and fan base. That saying however has lost some of its luster. Toronto, once known for its classic shows, has lowered the bar for what they are willing to accept. With FYI, we’re on a mission to restore that “classic” element to the stage show.

Founded in 2004, FYI: The Showcase began as a weekly “Apollo Style” competition event in downtown Toronto, bringing in regular supporters, and assisting in the development of local artists. Each week, artists were challenged to bring their best to the stage in front of a live audience. The audience acted as instant judges of talent. If they were not feeling you, you would know! Artists were promptly escorted to stage left the moment the audience said the word(s) – “Bockkle Him/Her/Them” (A Jamaican term that means get off the stage quick). This element was not meant to embarrass the artist, but to provide feedback in the most authentic way. On the flip side, the Artist received instant gratification if their talent was not only up to par but better.

2010 – Until…

“It’s been a long time coming but Linkage Movement is excited to launch what will become the home for Toronto’s finest urban artists,” said Dwayne Dixon. “While there are many great events in the city with a similar objective, FYI is unique in that the “featured” artists get to rock with The Movement Band. The Movement band will blow your mind with their song selection. The artists we select will be true professionals who understand the art of performance, and the importance working with other musicians to prefect their set.”

“There is so much extraordinary talent in this city; we want to ensure that the artists have an opportunity, a receptive audience, and a great venue to shine in,” said Dixon. “Harlem Restaurant is at the cutting-edge of Toronto’s urban culture, and provides the perfect ambience for well-rooted urban musicians. These artists deserve the opportunity to share their talents with their peers, and promote their strengths in the international urban community. FYI is dedicated to the development of these artists and the music industry with this monthly event.
