Bio

The breadth and depth of Gabe Cummins' talent have gained him a well-deserved reputation as a powerhouse on the New York City music scene. Gabe started his musical career at the age of 13, playing his guitar in blues bands around the Upstate New York area. During high school, his stylistic interests turned to jazz, which led Gabe to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.

During his four-year tenure at Berklee, Gabe had the privilege of studying under guitar masters such as Mick Goodrick and Wayne Krantz, and became a staff accompanist for Berklee's vocal department. He also performed extensively with Berklee's talented faculty and student body, including Victor Mendoza, Giovanni Hidalgo and Arturo Sandoval. Receiving Berklee's Best Scholarship upon entrance, his continued hard work also earned him Berklee's Achievement Scholarship for Guitar Performance.

After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Berklee, Gabe moved to Ithaca, NY where he maintained an impressive student roster and regular correspondence lessons with world-renowned jazz educator Charlie Banacos. During his time in Ithaca, Gabe embraced central New York's bebop tradition, performing extensively with Danny D'Imperio and Steve Brown.

Wanting to sink his teeth into more contemporary styles of performing, Gabe moved to New York City in January 2004. He is currently an adjunct Professor of guitar at New York University, where he completed a Masters Degree in Performance and Composition. Since moving to New York City, Gabe has performed, recorded and worked with some of the biggest names in jazz: John Scofield, Lenny Pickett and Gil Goldstein, to name a few. He has worked with some of the city’s top Rock, Funk, and R&B acts, such as John Mayer, Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers), Mavis Staples, Dr. John, and Aaron Neville.

Teaching remains a very important part of Gabe's career. He values the continual exchange of knowledge and the true love of music he shares with his students. He has developed an impressive client base for private lessons on guitar, bass, and piano that includes an dynamic range of New York’s most established and up-and-coming musicians. Gabe is also proud to have been nominated for New York University’s Teacher of the Year Award.

As a charismatic performer, unique writer/composer, stellar educator, and savvy producer, Gabe Cummins poses a quadruple threat--and his scope only seems to grow. Look out for Gabe’s new singer/songwriter project in the near future. It promises to infect you with the excitement of getting to know yet another aspect of this ever-expanding, dynamite artist.
