"Blurt Magazine - 8/10 Stars"

“Sullivan's a native of Tucson and here, for his inaugural long player, he taps some of Tucson's top talent; in addition to the members of Sullivan's band, Nick Luca, Mike Hebert, Andrew Collberg, Brittany Dawn and Calexico's Joey Burns appear. Luca also engineered, while Craig Schumacher handled mixing duties, and the record was cut at the venerable Wavelab Studios, so By the Dirt is as pure a product of the Old Pueblo - in all its parched, windswept, desert noir beauty - as it gets. Yet the record's not a collection of textbook twang or gratuitous nods to border culture; rather, it's an eclectic, engaging set that touches on a wealth of Americana sub-genres, from blues and gospel to country and rock ‘n' roll, much like the city itself is a study in shifting social strata and varying indigenous mores.”

"By the Dirt is an album brimming with confidence and depth"

By the Dirt is an album brimming with confidence and depth usually reserved for seasoned performers. Drawing from a diverse palette of American jazz, country, rock n' roll and blues By the Dirt is a collection of desolate, post-industrial tales of death, spirituality, loneliness, drunkenness, and general riff-raff. - High Noon

Gabriel Sullivan & Taraf de Tucson is a blazing nine-piece ensemble that creates a swirling, sweaty, danceable noise ... using twisting violin melodies straight from Romania, the Southwestern twang of Calexico, the greasy groove of cumbia, and a horn section thats equal parts salsa and Balkan brass. Theyre a Gypsy Reggaeton explosion!

Bandleader Gabriel Sullivan cut his teeth as a teen in Tucsons punk scene. But his musical restlessness kept him seeking out new sounds. Somewhere along the way, he discovered some fascinating parallels between the Mexican conjunto music of his hometown and the thrilling songs of Romanias Gypsy people. The rhythms are for dancing, the melodies are full of pathos, and the performances are at once virtuosic and rough-and-tumble. While Sullivan is one of the busiest musicians in Tucson, playing guitar, percussion, and keys regularly with half a dozen bands, his Taraf de Tucson is the fullest expression of all of
his musical obsessions.
