"Gadamer"

- Allaboutjazz

"Your Imaginary Friend"

Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2007-07-04
Swiss artist uses cello and electronics to create compositions that are altogether beautiful, and ambient, experimental. Not just drones, atonality, he uses a perfect degree of melody to keep it musical but not avante or ponderous. Fans of all things lush yet minimal, georgeous but not trite, complex yet simple, musical yet atonal. Eno, Harold Budd, hell I’ll even throw in Pink Floyd at my own risk. Fantastic to know there are young artists taking this type of experimentation to the next level.

1) slow melody, slight swing, quite nice and musical in a near guitar playing mode, last minute or so is very quiet
2) slow, chill repeating synth theme, a beautiful feel, builds slowly in a mindful manner taking a good 9 minutes to finally have layers of sounds and cello, etc enrichen the fiel
3) brief acoustic sounds
4) nice cello work, somber melody, perfect amount of echo and layering, looping
5) very chill super cool looping, treated cello string harmonics “whistle”, wow
6) excellent solo cello work
7) very quiet intro, long chill, minimal with cello sounds and other incidental acoustic noises treated with mostly just echo
8) avante cello/upright bass feel, bursts, sporatic
9) slow cello with a looped noise
10) very quiet start, almost subsonic, cello bow exchanges appear, and begin to rise up into an excellent hypnotic state (it would be good to start this track upon going into a mic break because by about the time you are done the track will be just getting interesting, with about 4-5 minutes left) - KZSU Zookeeper Online

Bio

Free improvisation, post-rock, ambient, techno and jazz - these are a few of the musical genres that could define the project named GADAMER. However, at the heart of the project we find a keyboard and a cello, who interact within acoustic and electronic atmospheres. A contemporary and coherent syncretism: this is the essence of the duel - originally in the live format and now on record - that Andrea Manzoni and Zeno Gabaglio have chosen to draw, which also converges their own personal musical experiences.

Zeno Gabaglio – cello, electric cello Born in Mendrisio, Switzerland, in 1979, Zeno is a musician with a classical background (studies in Lugano, Fiesole and Basel) and a degree in philosophy (Florence). He has been musically active in diverse areas, from pop-rock (Frankie Hi NRG, Gionata, Tibe, Francesca Lago) to electro-acoustic improvisation (Bugge Wesseltoft, Teho Terdo). In 2007 he published his first solo recording “Uno” for the Pulver&Asche label, receiving positive international acclaim.

Andrea Manzoni – piano, fender rhodes, Mini-Moog, Hammond organ. Born in Biella, Italy, in 1979, and musically trained in the classic (with the maestros Tiziano Poli, Nazareno Carusi and Antonio Ballista) and in the jazz (with Stefano Battaglia, Franco D’Andrea and Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris) domains, he has widened his artistic horizon by moving also towards the pop-rock sector (with the band “Lomé” – proposed as newcomer at the Premio Tenco in 2006 – and with Annalisa Minetti). He has performed in many concerts around the world, together also with celebrity artists such as Aldo Romano.

Walter Zweifel – artistic producer Composer, producer and organist, Walter Zweifel is a unique cross-boarding artist. His activities range broadly from contemporary avant-guarde (collaborations with John Cage) to more commercial pop (producer/arranger for, among others, Donatella Rettore, Stephanie of Monaco and Laura Branighan).

Gadamer is produced by Altrisuoni and Radio Svizzera ReteDue, with the support of the City of Lugano and the Raiffeisen of Mendrisio and Valle di Muggio.
