Con un don innato para crear piezas musicales ingeniosas, los hermanos Gallo-Rodriguez originarios de Guadalajara, continuan su viaje musical con GALLO; un proyecto en el cual combinan magistralmente lo tradicional y moderno para producir un sonido ecléctico en el cual demuestran su gran experiencia y talento.
GALLO es el nombre de la nueva propuesta musical de los hermanos Kinski y Rodax; ex-integrantes del galardonado y tan aclamado grupo de rock alternativo Monte Negro. Esta agrupación políglota nace en Los Angeles, California apenas el año pasado. Ésto ocurre despues de que los hermanos deciden homenajear las multiples influencias musicales que ayudaron a moldear su peculiar estilo. La cumbia, reggae, funk, punk rock, y electronica son tan solo algunos de los generos que GALLO interpreta y fusiona hábilmente para crear un obras únicas y cautivadoras.

El 22 de enero los tapatíos presentarán su nuevo album " Phoenix Rising". Simultáneamente arrancarán con la gira " Fuego/Phoenix Rising" en la cual compartirán su música con fans de todos los rincones de EEUU, Puerto Rico y tambien los tijuanenses; pues este 25 de enero nos deleitarán con una presentación en el BLACK BOX ubicado en la Avenida Revolución.

En exclusiva Kinski, vocalista de GALLO nos adelanta "[Para la presentación en Tijuana] esperen un show con mucha energía y muy diverso; del reggae a electrónica a cumbia a punk en 5 segundos.Pondremos nuestro sudor, sangre y alma en el escenario."

A pesar de que la gira durará 10 semanas y tienen más de 40 fechas ya confirmadas, solo habrá una presentación de este lado de la frontera. " [Esto] se debe a que no tenemos medios para distribuír nuestra música en México. Lo cual es muy difícil de aceptar, ya que en el 2010 [como Monte Negro] estuvimos de gira por todo el centro de México y sus alrrededores y la gente nos recibió muy bien. Tijuana estaba en la mira por 5 años, y ahora que se dió nos dá gusto." Explíca Kinski.

Una noche nublada, mojada y fria le da la bienvenida a GALLO despues de cinco años de tener a Tijuana en la mira. Afuera, la lluvia no cesa; pero dentro del Black Box el ambiente es distinto, cálido. El tamaño del local es perfecto para un evento íntimo, ya que permite un contacto más personal con el artista. Es media noche y en el tercer piso de Black Box GALLO ya está instalando su equipo en la tarima. Quince cortos minutos después, el escenario ya está listo para dar inicio a esta fiesta entre amigos.

Un telón de fondo negro dice GALLO en letras blancas y un microfono en el centro de la plataforma decorado con lucecitas blancas, plumas negras y rojas. Las luces de neon alumbran sutílmente los rostros de los hermanos Kinski y Rodax mientras suben al escenario en compañia de Zöell y Pachy, un par de músicos súmamente talentosos que los acompañarán en esta gira. Automáticamente, mis ojos se dirigen hacia los pies de Kinski, quién trae puesto el par de zapatos mas interesantes que jamás haya visto; tenis rojos con alas que me roban una sonrrisa y además combinan perfecto con su atuendo de jeans y camisa color negro. Rodax viene vestido con una camiseta verde de GALLO un chaleco negro, gorro y unos jeans.

Son las 00:17 y suenan los teclados, entra la bateria e instantaneamente siento una carga de electricidad correr por mis venas y subconcientemente mi cabeza se mueve al són del bajo de Rodax y "The Red." Le siguen con "Hyetal (Torrentoso)"; una explosión de sonidos invade mis oidos y la letra cautiva mi mente. La intensidad de Zöell al tocar la bateria es fascinante. Con un tono de perseverancia y esperanza llega "Prayer Song"; otra más del segundo album de la trilogía "Fuego/Phoenix Rising/Mamawe". Procede el bullicio con "No Te Creo" un tema bastante divertido que pone un excelente ambiente; es inevitable contenerse y no bailar al ver a Kinski tan entrado. Pachy, el boricua con los dedos mágicos y sonrrisa deslumbrante nos regala unas dulces melodías en el teclado al són de "Vislumbrados" .

"Muchas gracias Tijuana, nunca habíamos estado aquí; éramos virgenes...bueno, no sexualmente" bromea Kinski. Después de tanto gozar con ritmos eufóricos, llega un momento más relajado con "Virgen de la Soledad". El bajeo sensual de Rodax nos acarícia alma mientras la encantadora voz de Kinski nos enamora y traslada a otro mundo. Se hace presente la melancolía y romanticismo esta noche con "Hasta el Fin". Una canción hermosa en todos los sentidos; la interpretación de Kinski es tan poderosa que tan solo con verlo transmite ese dolor sobre el cual canta. Reaparece la alegría con "Renegades" y el sonido fresco e innovador del duo me pone de nuevo a bailar. Las luces danzan junto con los chicos que vienen decididos a conquistar corazones tijuanenses esta noche. El vocalista de GALLO agradece los aplausos y gritos de aprobación del público. Enseguida, con un sonido misterioso y alucinador llega "La Bête Noire" un tema que ocasiona sensaciones más allá de increíbles. (Supongo que el que esté en francés tiene mucho que ver con eso, símplemente escuchar el idioma excita a más de una; y si el hombre está guapo ni se diga!) Se despiden de Tijuana derrochando energía contagiosa con "Sikki Sikki". El escenario les queda chico a los carnales tapatíos.

A pesar de la lluvia, los tijuanenses se animaron a venir a pasar un buen rato con esta nueva propuesta músical de Los Ángeles, California. Aunque por estos rumbos aún no son muy conocidos y faltó más promoción, están trabajando árduamente para sobresalir con este proyecto sólido. Lo anterior no tardara en suceder si siguen poniendo su sudor,sangre y alma en el escenario; como ocurrió esta noche.

GALLO is the new Los Angeles-based, multi-lingual, worldbeat band created by Kinski Gallo and his brother, Rodax – the frontman and bassist, respectively, of the highly acclaimed, award-winning rock band Monte Negro. For the past year, Kinski and Rodax have been digging deep into their creative depths and have ultimately emerged proffering a choice collection of music replete with sexy grooves, innovative beats, and inspiring lyrics.

FUEGO, the first record to be completed by the duo, heralds a lush assembling of all-Spanish, upbeat, funky tunes and dance inspiring melodies. Their all-English release, PHOENIX RISING, encompasses a richly diverse, avant-garde collection of electro-pop and complex yet accessible hits. To close the triangle, GALLO created MAMAWE, the third and final record in the trilogy, a gorgeous tribute to electro-world-beat incorporating cutting edge twists on traditional Latin sounds.
After almost 10 years of delivering music geared towards alternative audiences around the world, Kinski and Rodax decided to form GALLO in 2012 to pay homage to their many defining influences, ranging from electronica and pop to disco and punk rock.

Kinski and Rodax are seasoned veterans of the international music scene. When touring with their rock band, Monte Negro, they shared the stage with a variety of mega-acts ranging from Gwen Stefani and Nine Inch Nails to Café Tacuba, Zoé and Enanitos Verdes.

Originally hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, both brothers found their early Latin music influences within their own large family, looking primarily to their father, an accomplished mariachi singer. They were surrounded at all times by traditional romantic ballads, boleros, and norteñas. In their early teens, they moved to Venice, CA, where they were further exposed to all that American radio had to offer: rock and roll, new wave, punk rock, and electronica. Over the past years, Kinski and Rodax have made music from every one of these genres, all the while striving to stay true to both their Latin American roots and their contemporary Anglo inspiration.

Finally, as GALLO, the brothers are excited to offer an expansive and explosive trilogy of records that encompass everything that these many years of experience and passion have brought them. With FUEGO, PHOENIX RISING, and MAMAWE, GALLO takes us on a journey that at times has us groovin’ to funky and fresh dance beats and at other times has us deep in contemplation and meditation on life and love, both lost and found. Formally known as Monte Negro, Electronic/Latin duo Gallo, introduces their new music at Blue Microphone's The House of Rock in Santa Monica, California. - Blue Microphones

The road has come full circle for Kinski and Rodax Gallo who in the late 90’s founded Anima, a Spanish-sung punk/new-wave band. But as time would tell and with different band members, the Gallo brothers would also go from playing as a band formerly known as Madrepore to one named Monte Negro.

Under this last, the bros and guitarist Jason Li Shing, along with drummer Xavier Lopez, would release Cicatrix, a highly-praised rock album that carried the popular tunes “Arde el corazón (Triangled Love), “Give me love”, “Me duele no estar junto a ti”, and “Pena Colectiva”. Fugitives of Pleasure/Pasajeros and Cosmic Twins would later be added to the Monte Negro discography as well.

Now, the road has brought Kinksi and Rodax back to square one as a pair of brothers out to conquer music fans as a duo. Come February 5 and working under the band name Gallo, the bros will release Fuego, Phoenix Rising, and Mamawe, a trilogy featuring songs they composed over the last year.

Collaborating with Grammy Award winning engineer, Seth Horan (Robi Draco, Black Guayaba), as well as renowned keyboardist and programmer Juan Covarrubias (Daddy Yankee), Gallo crafted their new high-energy vision to give birth to Fuego as an all-Spanish album, Phoenix Rising in English, and a bilingual Mamawe. The three releases follow the brother’s preference over Latin-influenced rock with electro dance beats.

Additional artists contributing to the record include Christopher Cester (Jet/Damn Dogs), Chris Pierce (Brothers and Sisters/Army Wives), Garrett Henritz (Fol Chen) and Julia Rose (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

An early 2013 promotional tour will take the band across the U.S. and to Puerto Rico. The albums are currently available independently for presale.

The album encompasses a richly diverse, avant-garde collection of nine electro-pop and complex yet accessible hits. Gallo is a new project from brothers Kinski and Rodax Gallo Rodriguez, formerly of the rock en Español group Monte Negro. Gallo is set to release their debut project this February; it's an ambitious trilogy of three full-length albums.

The trilogy is a response to the hurdles confronting artists who create bilingual or Spanish music in America. It's also an opportunity for the brothers to explore their wide range of artistic influences.

"We grew tired of having to explain our stance. So we did Fuego an album fully in Spanish, Phoenix Rising fully in English, and Mamawe fully bilingual," says Kinski Gallo Rodriguez. I spoke with Rodriguez as he prepared for a tour that will bring Gallo to Sabbatical in Broad Ripple on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

NUVO: Can you tell me about your new release? You're simultaneously issuing three albums - - that seems ambitious.

Kinski Gallo Rodriguez: Ambitious indeed and it almost left us dried of all our senses. But we're glad to have done it and glad to be able to tour extensively and share our music with all kinds of people.

When it came time to record, we realized we had too many songs in too many different genres for just one album. We wanted to craft together our diverse musical taste in a fun way. The records contains one focus throughout though: electric beats and electronic-driven music. We wanted it to be anachronistic, but still make three very concrete records gelling from beginning to end. I think we've done that.

NUVO: Has there been an evolution in your music since disbanding Monte Negro and forming Gallo?

Gallo Rodriguez: Yes, Rodax and I felt the need to expand beyond the typical rock band approach. We wanted to do more dance, trip-hop, samba, cumbia, reggae, ska and many more rhythms that are much more beat-oriented as opposed to guitar-driven.

We did a lot of Latin-infused stuff with Mamawe, the third record in the trilogy. That was something we longed to do, but we found a lot of resistance to that with our past band members in Monte Negro.

NUVO: The rhythms of cumbia often appear in your work; is that a significant influence? What other things are you listening to that shape your sound?

Gallo Rodriguez: Cumbia was considered vulgar in Mexico, but it was a great genre that was always present. Every party had it. As a child, I loved Sonora Dinamita and the things on the radio. It just made you shake your body involuntarily.

Other influences: I like Bajofondo Tango Club and CAMPO. I love Gustavo Cerati; he actually was the one who awakened me to the idea of electronic music. He's a true pioneer and I say I owe him more than most bands. Bocanada is a true gem and it influenced us greatly. So did Massive Attack, Tricky, Bjork, Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon and a lot of bossa nova. Basically, all we do is make electro beats with Latin sounds and what comes out is a bit of a novelty to us.

NUVO: I really like your song "Mamawe." It seems to have an almost African sound.

Gallo Rodriguez: That's funny; my wife is from Africa and the first time I played it she said we should go to Mali to record the chorus with local singers. I would've loved to, but logistics got in the way. That song came about on New Year's Day. I just started to chant "Mamawe." It means nothing really, but it felt so good and positive that I decided to record it.

Rodax and I have always listened to African music. Also a lot of rhythms come from Africa - from both pre- and post-colonial periods. So, I'd say Africa has inspired us directly and indirectly.

But everything inspires us: the sun, my son, my family, my friends, trouble and love. Love is the only miracle to me and it reaches farther than most things on this planet.

NUVO: Your father was a mariachi musician; was music a big part of your upbringing?

Gallo Rodriguez: He always sang around us. Without knowing, he taught me a lot about harmonies - - but never methodically. It was always fun a way to escape or chase away our sorrow and to express our gratitude.
