"Nun But the Brave"

Meeting the lads in the hip surroundings of Havana bar in downtown Brussels, UP Front decided to get the obvious question out of the way: Gambler Nun & Radio are, of course, a band, but what about that name

"It's taken from an Ernest Hemingway short story," explains singer/songwriter Trevor Dunworth. "The tale takes place in a hospital. It gets weird - didn't know old Ernie was such a wacko. The cast of characters includes a Mexican gambler, who gets shot in a small town in Montana (daily occurrence even now), a nun with a desire for sainthood who will pray for "whatever", and the sickly Mr. Frazer, who always listens to the radio. The nun persuades three Mexican musicians to perform a gig."

Getting the gist? Me neither.

Not that these guys are Mexicans, or nuns. Or even gamblers. Well, the last I didn't ask - none of my business.

Young, talented, intelligent and sometimes just plain silly, they are fresh blood straight from rural New York. Actually, Dunworth comes from Vermont which, although this has done nothing for his French (it's St. Géry not St. Jerry, dearest), might explain his warm milk-and-honey voice that seems to make all the girlies' heads think of red-treed walks.

"We met up as students at SUNY (State University of New York) pursuing different alleyways of life, "says Dan Votke, the bassist, whom I saw play a mini-gig with only three strings. I found this profoundly cool.

Their tour van, however, although it looks cool, well, just isn't. Cheery Jamey Pass, a mad drummer who squirted Corona beer on his first rock journo (all forgiven), says: "It's great here (in Brussels), but the van, it's always the van. Van towed, van breaks down, parking the van outside a zoo in the dark. We thought you had serious wildlife in Belgium."

The two electric guitarists, Eric Lenge and Dylan Passoreti, have all-but shaded their eyes from my camera and avoided speaking - they're a bit shy.

But, like their colleagues, they're fantastic musicians who all pull off a great show whether wearing 'Green Gig' t-shirts (they happily play "environmental gigs and weddings"), wigs, dark glasses or white, pasty make up - as they sometimes do.

But what do they sound like?

"Musically, expect to hear influences of grunge, rock, sixties rock and frogs and stuff," says Dunworth, who pens the band's intelligent lysrics. "We can thunder out punk rock then turn around and lure you into something a little slower and alternative," he adds.

All that without the blinking of a bright NYC-apple eye.

Their album 'Bloodwine' (a good combination, if you ask me) is already available. Be sure to check out the grindings of the title track and 'Jezebel'. Meantime, a new album will be recorded in Belgium in September. (Ahh, they love us, too.) Having heard a live show, I'm looking forward to hearing their self-composition, 'Lee Harvey Oswald' on that CD.

Are they relishing spending more time in the area? "If we can just keep our van legally parked, all will go well," says Metzler.

Bio

The Gambler Nun and Radio, often referred to as The Gamblers, took their name from a Ernest Hemingway’s short story. They are a band from New York State currently working on releasing their 2nd coming album "The Horse, the Carriage, and the Leopard Flame". Their debut album "Bloodwine" and their EP "Lock and Load" are currently available. They spent the first half of 2007 on tour in Europe where they raised over 2,000 Euros to help build a school in Senegal. They've also worked with charity organizations such as GreenGigs, promoting a "green" lifestyle. They currently are planning to tour the Northeast US in Summer 2008.

It was during their time at SUNY Oneonta that they met producer and sound engineer Paul Geluso (produced Animal Collectives first album). The band collaborated with Paul on a range of projects including an “Apple” rock video with their song “Miracle ED”. These projects then inspired both Paul and the Gamblers to create an album together.
