"Garden of Weeds to open for Trooper"

EMC entertainment -Stittsville-based indie rock-group Garden of Weeds will open the main stage for Trooper during the Canada Day in Kanata event at Walter Baker Park, July 1. The four-piece band reapplied for the position after opening for Sloan in 2011, under the name Plush Garden, and nabbed the coveted time slot.

"For the Sloan show, we really liked the atmosphere, just being at that big festival," said Adam Traversy, who plays guitar and vocals. "Just the sea of people out there you're playing to is great."

The band - which also features Skyler Radmore on vocals and guitar, Shawn Baldwin on bass and vocals, and Greg Higgins on drums and vocals - is planning on giving the audience a great show.

"We're going to put on a high energy rock show, mixing a lot of well known covers with a lot of original songs on the album we're about to release," said Traversy. "We're excited to open for (Trooper)."

The band has a new album, Homemade Lemonade, which is set for a summer release and will be available at the Canada Day show. The title for the 10-track disc was chosen "because we made it all by ourselves," said Traversy.

BEST BAND Diane McNulty, program director and stage manager for Canada Day in Kanata, said the band was a favourite with the committee and with the members of Trooper, who have the final word about the opening youth band.

"They said they have absolutely no concerns," she said. "They're a great fit with our headliner."

Although the band has played the show before, they were chosen to open again because they had the best application - having stepped up their social media presence and stage performances.

"Out of all of them, they were the best band.

Popular Rockers Introduce New Name

Ottawa: Plush Garden was born when four years into their career, Canadian rockers The Weeds came to a fork in the road. Go left and get sued for trademark infringement, or go right and search for a new name. A seemingly easy choice; how hard could it possibly be to choose a new band name? Well, it turns out to be a lot harder than you might imagine. Even the most obscure name ideas get eliminated just as fast as you can Google, and weeks turn into months of frustration.
The proverbial silver lining in every cloud really does seem to exist however, because with a new album near completion and a tour in the works, the time for change was never better. After embracing the challenge and emerging refreshed and renewed the four musicians are now anxious for people to know the Plush Garden sound. The band has created a unique rock ’n’ roll vibe that will make anyone with even a passing sense of rock history enjoy Plush Garden. The websites and other social media are being switched around and the trademark applications are in, so with any luck Plush Garden will be a keeper.

"The Weeds CD Review"

Fateema Sayani said the band produced a CD with a lot of muscle. We would add passion, creativity, talent, heart, soul, blood, good, bad, wierd and fantastic! - The Ottawa Citizen

The band's first recording was released July 31, 2009 as The Weeds. You can buy it at CD Baby and everywhere else on-line. We renamed ourselves last year and the official Garden of Weeds début album 'Homemade Lemonade' is now available.

Garden of Weeds is a four-piece indie rock band from Ottawa, Ontario, with a unique sound that is contemporary but also has a definite classic rock and blues influence.

Notable recent gigs: the band opened for Yukon Blonde at the Bishop's U Frosh Week party and the crowd was extremely enthusiastic, and Garden of Weeds also opened for Trooper at the 2013 Canada Day in Kanata celebrations. Officials said they had in excess of 20,000 people coming out to enjoy the entertainment. The band autographed CDs and posters, and posed for pictures with fans for an hour after the show, before rushing off to the other side of town for their second gig of the day. It was a 6 gig weekend!

Garden of Weeds recorded their debut CD in 2009 at The Bathouse, The Tragically Hip's own recording studio in Bath, near Kingston, Ontario. In 2011 they released a 3 song EP and have recently finished a second full length LP called Homemade Lemonade. You can check it out at
