"Gary has stars and stripes in his eyes"

Published on Friday 6 July 2012 08:23

A LEIGH singer-songwriter is hoping to make an international breakthrough after a successful trip to the home of country music.

Gary Quinn travelled to Tennessee to play some of Nashville’s best-known venues as one of the UK’s representative acts at a festival organised by the Country Music Association (CMA), including an appearance backed by top US talent at The Stage.

Irish-born Gary, who has lived in the borough since last year, has received further recognition by being nominated for the Horizon Award, given to the best up-and-coming act, at the British Country Music Association Awards to be held in London in September.

Gary, of Leigh Road, says getting a taste of the big-time in America has heightened his ambitions to cross the pond again to record the follow-up album to his current EP This Cowboy’s Heart in Nashville and work with country music’s A-list talent.

He said: “It was a dream come true to perform with a band of that quality who’ve worked with so many big names.

“It was my second time out there and now I want to try and move up another rung on the ladder.

“I’ve made connections out there and I’m looking to get songs together and record my album in Nashville.”

However, Gary says he has no desire to leave the UK and hopes to work with other country acts, such as Raintown and Ade Payne, to promote the music in Britain.

"A Tyrone cowboy's heart"

By Shelley Marsden

Coming onto our radar a lot recently has been young Gary Quinn, a country singer-songwriter from Tyrone currently residing in Leigh, in Lancashire.

Things are building momentum for this young performer, who is due to perform inNashvilleno less this month, as part of the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Showcase.

Quinn gigs in and around the north west of England, but no doubt you’ll be seeing more of him in other parts of the country soon, as he’s just recently signed with UK Country Music Management.

The year 2010 saw Quinn taking his country music out ofIrelandand sharing it for the first time, with the single ‘He Don’t Show Her Anymore’, for which he received an award from the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival.

His songs were heard on radio stations in his nativeIreland,UK,AmericaandAustralia, and he opened for top touringUScountry recording artists and appeared at several prestigious music festivals inIrelandand theUK.

Garycontinued his achievements in 2011. In February, he signed with FlashpointUKand subsequently went into the studio to write and record his debut album with the influential production house.

A number ofGary’s songs were used in the 2011 award winning short film ‘Hardy Hands’ that is due for worldwide release this year.Garyhas made several TV appearances as a featured guest and performer and current single ‘This Cowboy’s Heart’ hit radio stations acrossEurope,AmericaandAustraliain September.

The highlight for Quinn to date, however, was being invited to perform at the Belfast Nashville Songwriter Showcase inNashville,Tennesseelater this month.

He told us, “There is a strong heritage of Country music inIreland. Growing up I listened to Kris Kristofferson and was then drawn toGarthBrooks, Alan Jackson and more recently Keith Urban.

“Although I’ve been influenced by these artists I feel I have my own style” says Quinn. “I’m always keen to perform inNashvilleand bring my sound to the fans and industry insiders on Music City Row”.

Gary Quinn’s current single, which he co-wrote, is entitled ‘This Cowboy’s Heart’ and his album of the same name is out now.

"The David Allan Page"

This has also been a very good few months for another young, talented artist from a little nearer home. Following a hugely positive appearance at this year's (2012) Belfast Nashville Songwriters Showcase in Nashville where he performed a set of his own material, Ireland's Gary Quinn, has just been chosen to appear at the CMA Global Artist Party in Music City in June as part of what was once Fan Fair. A huge honour and it comes as Gary's new single, 'This Cowboy's Heart', (co written with Phil Haywood) is receiving considerable airplay throughout Europe. We can expect his debut album very soon. He's also provided songs for the award winning Northern Ireland short film 'Hardy Hands'. Directed by Chris Baugh, this story of a homecoming that is not quite as expected gets worldwide distribution later this year.
Gary has an engaging country voice and style. Emotional with shades, to these ears at least, of Dan Seals and Kristofferson (one of his earliest influences) in there and he certainly sings straight from the heart. His compositions are superbly crafted - poignant and at times haunting. As he says "There is a strong heritage of country music in Ireland". I reckon young Gary is heading for the top but you can check him out for yourself at www.myspace.com/GaryJPQuinn. - Country Music People

"New EP and Nashville dates for Gary Quinn"

BY JOHN McCUSKER
OMAGH singer-songwriter Gary
Quinn is heading for a series of gigs
in Nashville – hot on the heels of
the release of his brand new fivetrack
EP.
Entitled ‘This Cowboy Heart,’ the EP is
currently available on download via iTunes
with copies making their way into the shops
by early March. Three songs on the album
have been penned over the last two years
and also included are two previously released
tracks, Tin Man and Keep on Playin’.
Gary had initially intended launching a
new album. But it has been an uphill battle
to finance such a project.
“It’s been a bit of a struggle to finance the
album so I wanted to release another EP to
give people a taste for the album that is still
a work in progress,” he says this week. “I
have plenty of songs ready to go but am finding
it difficult to get them laid down.”
The tracks were recorded at three different
studios on either side of the Atlantic –
Flashpoint Studios in England, Pinegrove
Studios in Ballymena and StudioPros in the
USA.
“I know it sounds a bit extravagant,” Gary
laughs, “But ‘He Don’t Show Her Anymore’
won a competition online and the prize was a
$1,200 production package for the song. All
instrumentation, production and mastering
was done in LA and I recorded the vocals at
Flashpoint UK.
“This Cowboys Heart, Tin Man and Keep
On Playin’ were produced at Flashpoint UK
and Live Each Day was produced in Pinegrove
Studios, Ballymena with Paul McNeilly.
StudioPros in LA have been in touch recently
to offer me another free track as they
really like what I’m doing at the moment so
we are in the process of laying down another
track that will feature on the upcoming album
that, fingers crossed, I can get out by
the end of 2012.”
Meanwhile this weekend, Gary joins the
line-up of the Belfast Nashville Songwriters
Festival with gigs alongside top notch American
artists like Clint Black and Nanci Griffith.
“I’m due to open for the CMA Songwriters
Series Concert with Clint Black, Bill Anderson
and Bob DiPeiro on Saturday in the Empire
Hall. This will be an excellent opportunity
to meet with and perform in front of three
top hit songwriters and performers. It’s an
honour and a privilege to be opening for
these guys as they’ve been there, done that
and written the song all about it. Hopefully
friendships and future working partnerships
can be forged but it will be an experience of
a lifetime.”
Gary is also lined up to perform at the
Belfast Nashville Birthday Concert with Nanci
Griffith and friends. The afternoon birthday
bash is a wind down to the festival and a
chance for all the performers and fans to
mingle in Madison’s Hotel in Belfast.
“I’m also due to meet with Collin Raye as
he performs at the festival. I opened for him
when he was last in Omagh in May 2009 and
he will be working closely with UK Country
Music Management whom I’ve just recently
signed with,” Gary adds.
Meanwhile Panarts, who organise and run
the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival,
also run the Belfast Nashville Showcase annually
in Nashville, Tennessee. And through
the contacts, Gary heads off to Nashville in
early March for a number of gigs in Music
City.
“Colin Magee, of Panarts, recently made
contact to say that I had been successfully
chosen to be one of five artists they would be
bringing out to Nashville to perform in two
showcases,” Gary explains. “One of these
will be in the world famous Bluebird Café.
“Additionally they will look to set up meetings
with industry movers and shakers in an
effort to help further my career as a singer,
songwriter and performer.
“Words can’t express the excitement I feel
about heading to Nashville to perform. Fingers
crossed it will open brand new avenues
for me to explore.”

"Gary plans for Belfast festival date and trans-Atlantic trip"

BY JOHN MCCUSKER
OMAGH-based singer Gary
Quinn returns to the line-up of
the Belfast-Nashville Songwriters’
Festival early in the New
Year with an opening gig for
three of country music’s finest.
It is the third year in succession
that Gary has been part of
this well-established festival
and this year he will be opening
for Clint Black, Bill Anderson
and Bob DiPiero in the Empire
Hall on February 25.
The gig comes as Gary finalises
plans to head to
Nashville next year to write and
perform in what many regard
as the heart of country music.
“Obviously I’m delighted to
be asked back to perform at the
Belfast Nashville Songwriters
Festival,” Gary said this week.
“This will be my third year performing
having already opened
for Carlene Carter (2010) and
John Brannen (2011) in the
past.
“This time round I’ll be opening
for the BMI/CMA Songwriters’
Series with Clint Black, Bill
Anderson and Bob DiPiero in
the Empire Hall which will be a
huge opportunity to promote
my music.
“I’ll also be doing an ‘In The
Round’ performance at the
birthday bash on the Sunday,
sharing the bill with Nanci Griffith
which is really exciting. To
be performing before and in
front of these artists and being
able to meet and talk with them
will hopefully open more doors
for me in the future.”
The Belfast gig came about
after Colin Magee, director of
the Belfast Nashville Songwriters’
Festival, got in touch with
Gary just last month to offer
him a slot on the billing. The
pair have been in contact ever
since Gary’s song ‘He Don’t
Show Her Anymore’ was awarded
runner-up in the BNSF International
Songwriting Competition
in 2010.
“Thankfully Colin has always
looked to include me each year
since for which I’m eternally
grateful. I made some really
strong contacts with artists
from Ireland, the UK and
Nashvillle over the years and
hopefully this year will be no
different and I aim to get out to
Nashville in the New Year to cowrite
and perform.”
At present Gary is based in
England and has recently
signed with UK Country Management
which has resulted in
bookings for some major festival
dates in 2012/13.
A number of his songs were
included in the locally produced
award-winning film ‘Hardy
Hands’ which is due for worldwide
release in early 2012.
He is currently working on
his debut album, and adds, “It
seems to be taking forever but
just want to make sure it’s right
and something I can be proud
of.” - UlsterHerald

Australian native and Country Music superstar Keith Urban made a surprise appearance in 2011 to present guitar legend Emmanuel with the CMA International Artist Award.
“Eight years ago, CMA launched its first international showcase event during CMA Music Festival week,” said Jeff Walker, CEO/President, AristoMedia and CMA Board member. “Within a few years, we had to add a second show to accommodate the number of submissions we were receiving. In 2012, we will celebrate our ninth year of international showcases with a lineup that includes more than 20 artists. It’s been fascinating to watch these events grow year after year, and I’m extremely proud of the success we’ve had so far.”
Nashville-based record producer Mark Moffatt will once again serve as music coordinator for both Global Events. Digital marketing and new media company AristoWorks will stream both nights of showcases, which can be viewed live online at: CMAworld.com, CMT.ca, CountryMusicChannel.com.au, DreamWest-tv.fr, HighwayFM.com, and AristoWorks.com.

"Country Music’s Worldwide Appeal Shines at Chevrolet Presents the CMA Global Artist Party"

By Bob Doerschuk

Orange-shirted package tourists from Australia were easy to spot among the standing-room-only audience at The Stage On Broadway as artists from beyond U.S. shores and borders presented their spins on Country Music.

Shortly after 6:30 PM on Monday, June 4, Jeff Walker, President/CEO of AristoMedia Group, welcomed international visitors as well as locals to Chevrolet Presents the CMA Global Artist Party, for nine years the official kick-off event of the CMA Music Festival. CMA CEO Steve Moore followed with his own greeting. “You know this better than some of us here in Nashville, but Country Music is growing dynamically across the globe, and we’re committed to nurturing and encouraging that,” he said.
The next four hours more than proved the point. Australia’s O’Shea, the husband-and-wife duo consisting of Mark and Jay O’Shea, emceed the event with brisk professionalism. Mark in particular laced their banter with irreverent humor and diversions, inviting the audience to “give a wolf whistle for my lovely, hot, sexy wife” and expressing mock annoyance at being mistaken as a New Zealander in the wake of Lord of the Rings and “Flight of the Conchords.”

Together, the primed the room for each performer. Joe Robinson, like the O’Sheas an Australian living now in Nashville, stunned onlookers with his guitar virtuosity, particularly when combining complex instrumental accompaniment to his own vocal. O’Shea performed two numbers, exhibiting tight harmonies on “Smash.” The Brad, Bryan and Curtis Rempel, who comprise Canada’s High Valley, delivered powerfully rhythmic material with strong, assertive three-part; as the handsome brothers left the stage, Mark O’Shea announced that a young lady had just confided in him that she had hatched a new fantasy involving High Valley, Rascal Flatts and her sharing a hot tub.

Belfast’s Gary Quinn brought everyone back to reality with “This Cowboy’s Heart,” a ballad animated by rich traditional imagery. Looking relaxed and at home in the spotlight, he ended with a power-punching up-tempo closer, “Watching You.” Though she bemoaned being the only New Zealander in the house apart from her proud parents, Vickie Evans riveted attention with multi-colored eyelid glitter, a subtle crown of blue on her brown hair and a solid grasp of modern Country composition. Lanky, tall, capped with a blue porkpie hat, Bob Corbett of Australia captivated fans with an exuberant set and wide, open grin. Yet for all the energy he unleashed, his meditation on the plight of indigenous Australians showed a movingly serious side on “Aborigine.”

Irish singer Lisa McHugh was scheduled to perform with Gene Watson, but when she was hospitalized shortly before showtime with a back injury, the veteran headliner dedicated a solo set to her and wowed the crowd. More or less standing still, the mic in his right and its cord in his left, he mined deep veins of old-school Country through singing alone. But at the very finish of his last song, “Going Away Party,” he suddenly hunched forward, bent his knees and nailed the last line with an electrifying jolt, enough to trigger the greatest ovation of the evening.

The unenviable task of following Watson went to Australia’s Morgan Evans, whose good-time stage presence and sheer enjoyment won over the room. His countryman Adam Harvey, who led the orange-shirted contingent as part of Country Music Channel trip to the CMA Festival, didn’t impress only through his amiable stage chops and good looks. His cleverly wicked patter prompted a burst of laughter when he described the young Gene Watson as “looking like a porn star in the ‘70s” and admitting, “If I was going to convert for anyone, it would be Gene Bloody Watson! I even got a little twitchy tonight when he sang ‘Farewell Party.’”

The evening closed with two spirited sets, the first by Canadian favorites Emerson Drive, whose set featured the classic “Moments” as well as their new single “He Was a Good - CMAWorld

"StudioPros Featured Artist: Gary Quinn"

After winning a Studio Pros production through Sonicbids, Gary Quinn is taking his country music out of Ireland and sharing it with the whole world.
Gary Quinn didn’t find Studio Pros through a Google search or in the pages of Recording Magazine like many musicians do… He found the service through a contest on Sonicbids, a site where artists submit electronic press kits to venues and gig listings. “Last year I’d entered a competition and won the opportunity to play in the Belfast Nashville Songwriter Festival,” he explains. “Having been successful at that, I thought I’d take another chance and look around to see what else was on Sonicbids.” A few months later, Quinn stumbled upon a contest that could win him a free production from Studio Pros, which he won for his song “He Don’t Show Her Anymore”.

“I thought I’d take a chance, and it worked out,” he says. “I was delighted to get the opportunity to do that.”

Quinn grew up in Ireland where he listened to his father’s Kris Kristofferson tapes, but he ended up falling in love with American country music after hearing the Garth Brooks album No Fences in the early ’90s. “There’s a big country and Irish scene with an undercurrent of American country, which is what I’m into,” Quinn says of Ireland. “It started picking up again with the likes of the Internet. It’s a bit more accessible.”

But while there is a country music circuit in his homeland, most performances were limited to festivals, which Quinn has played a few of. Between those gigs, he hosted his own singer/songwriter night in a local pub to give him the chance to play with various local country bands and showcase his original material.

Quinn has since moved to England, where he works with a producer who co-writes some of his music. He had already begun work on an album when he won the free song production from Studio Pros, so the timing couldn’t have been better. Jumping into his first online recording experience proved to be a quick transition. “I actually found the experience very easy,” he says. Quinn started by uploading an acoustic demo mp3 of his song to the Studio Pros website. Soon after, he received the song sketch with the basic structure of his song and immediately began the process of layering each instrument onto his production. He took care of the vocals himself, and even recruited Sarah Jory—a pedal steel player who has performed with Van Morrison—to play on his track.

“I found the whole process was very slick and very quick,” he says. “I was delighted with the turnaround. Sometimes whenever there’s a quick turnaround you expect to sacrifice quality, but the quality was right up there at the top as well.”

Quinn found that being able to provide modifications along the way helped him retain a sense of ownership over his project. “Once or twice I put down a few modifications, but they were very slight,” he remembers. “And they were done without any questions asked, which was brilliant. You’re putting your trust and faith into seasoned session musicians and producers, but you still felt like your opinion was valid.”

In many ways, he felt the Studio Pros process was quicker than going into an actual studio. “When you’re dealing with producers in studios face to face, you overanalyze what goes on, so you end up dwelling a bit longer on things that could have been nailed down,” he explains. “Using musicians out in LA that know the scene and know exactly what you’re looking for was great. And the turnaround was so quick, that was what surprised me the most.”

Quinn is planning on recording more songs with Studio Pros and hopes to release his album before the end of the year, when he can shop it around for radio play and placements in film and TV. You can hear more of his music on his Myspace page: www.myspace.com/garyjpquinn - StudioPros.com

Bio

Described as having a cool modern sound with echoes of the past, Gary Quinn is a singer-songwriter that knows how to pull on the heartstrings of his audiences. Creating beautifully crafted lyrics he draws you in with his acoustic driven performances of rock infused country balanced with the traditional. Quinn’s heart-filled songs cover contrasting subjects from the up-tempo ‘Live Each Day’ to the moody love song ‘He Don’t Show Her Anymore’.

Born and raised in Ireland Quinn listened to his father’s Kris Kristofferson tapes and then fell in love with the new country music coming out of America after hearing the Garth Brooks album ‘No Fences’ in the early 1990’s.

After releasing a five-track EP, Quinn’s songs have been heard on radio stations in his native Ireland, UK, America and Australia. He has opened for top touring US country artists and appeared at several prestigious music festivals in Ireland, UK and America.

Quinn’s self-penned ‘He Don’t Show Her Anymore’ received the runner-up accolade in the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival International Song Writing Competition in 2010. Subsequently he performed at the festival in 2010, 2011 and 2012 where he shared the stage with Nashville recording artists like Carlene Carter, John Brannen and Nanci Griffith as well as opening for the CMA Songwriter Series show that included Clint Black, Bill Anderson and Bob DiPeiro.

In March 2012 Gary was invited to perform at the Belfast Nashville Songwriter Showcase in Nashville and shared the stage with hit songwriters Billy Montana and Pam Rose. Gary was back in Nashville in June 2012 as he was invited to sing at the prestigious CMA Global Artist Party and CMA Music Fest (in the past known as Fan Fair) in downtown Nashville. This, along with opening for Gene Watson and his continuing performances in the UK, has led to Gary being nominated for 2 British Country Music Awards for 2012.

The latest offering from Quinn entitled ‘This Cowboy’s Heart’ can currently be heard on radio stations across the UK and Europe. New tracks for Quinn’s debut album are currently in production. In the meantime Gary's music can be heard by visiting his musician Facebook web page: www.facebook.com/GaryQuinnMusic

“Gary has an engaging country voice and style. Emotional with shades, to these ears at least, of Dan Seals and Kristofferson (one of his earliest influences) in there and he certainly sings straight from the heart. His compositions are superbly crafted - poignant and at times haunting. As he says "There is a strong heritage of country music in Ireland". I reckon young Gary is heading for the top but you can check him out for yourself at www.myspace.com/GaryJPQuinn.”
