"Self-titled 5 Song CD/EP"

One of the most rewarding things about listening to a million unsigned bands a week is finally finding one that you like. It's very rare that among the bands trying to make something of themselves, there is one that really stands out. Even more rare is finding a band that stands out in a genre of music that you aren't even particularly fond of. In my case, Gatsby Gets The Greenlight is a band that I wasn't sure I would dig. Their hardcore/emo tendencies were not really my style and I was a little forlorn by their Taking Back Sunday catchy-ness, but I was oh so wrong about this band. After listening to the entire EP a few times, I realized I had found one of those unsigned bands that are so rare.
Their newly released self-titled EP is a mere five tracks long and is amazingly entwined with everything you could ask for: thoughtful, aggressive guitar riffs, a powerful vocalist and stylish bass/drums. Each song has a totally different vibe, which I think is one of the best qualities you can have as a rising band. Lead vocalist Rory Pettingill is such a key player in bonding Gatsby's sound that he has an incredibly dominant presence in all of the songs. His vocals are hard to ignore and even harder to deny. Furthermore, their strong guitars serve as a breath of fresh air with distinctive, dancy and funky lines. I was impressed by how a band of such a popular genre could incorporate exceedingly interesting guitar parts. It is not often easy to do, especially when imitating the big bands (such as Taking Back Sunday) is so common.
On the EP, I would have to say my favorite song is “Wrecked But Still Needing”. It is truly representative of how different Gatsby Gets The Greenlight is. They have the ability to totally morph from one style to the next with great ease. If you're a fan of Armor For Sleep, Coheed & Cambria or even Bear Vs. Shark, you will definitely like this band. They are absolutely an unsigned gem that I am certain will become something big.
