We recently met Poetic Death and Gavlyn from the Organized Threat crew when they visited Berlin this summer during their tour through Europe. We had quite a long relaxing sit down and asked tons of questions as well as joining them to their Show at Bohannon where we also met fellow OGT member Yarah Bravo as well as many others.
It was a great few days and we hope to have captured it well enough in this mini documentars style interview.

Ihre Anfänge als Rapperin machte die Tochter einer in Deutschland geborenen Spanierin/Irin und eines Argentiniers in der Spoken Word – Szene von L.A.

Mit sechs weiteren Geschwistern im Haus verschmolz sie aus all den verschiedenen musikalischen Einflüssen ihren eigenen Stil und tourt nun mit einem unverwechselbaren Sound sowie einigen Mitgliedern aus ihrem Camp, Organized Threat, durch ganz Europa. Dabei machte die Crew auch in Berlin Halt und spielte eine ausverkaufte Show im legendären Bohannon.

Wie war deine Show hier in Berlin?

Gavlyn: Es war unfassbar! Die Show war ziemlich schnell ausverkauft, meine erstes Konzert in Berlin und die Leute hier haben mir einen warmen Empfang bereitet. Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass so viele Leute zu meiner Show kommen würden oder mich überhaupt kennen, aber sie konnten manche Raps mitsingen und waren ein unglaubliches Publikum.

Wie sieht dein Background aus? Wie bist du aufgewachsen?

Gavlyn: Ich bin in Kalifornien geboren und aufgewachsen – genauer gesagt in San Fernando Valley. Meine Mutter ist in Deutschland geboren, ich glaube ihr Vater war Latino und ihre Mutter ist aus Irland. Mein Vater kommt aus Argentinien. San Fernando Valley ist klein und langweilig, deswegen sind meine Freunde und ich dauernd ins benachbarte L.A. gependelt. Ich wollte als Kind schon Musik machen. Die Musik, die meine insgesamt sechs Geschwister und meine Eltern gehört haben, ist die Quelle meiner Inspiration. Meine Mutter ist Tänzerin und mein Vater war DJ. Bei uns standen alle auf verschiedene Musik-Stile, von Hip Hop bis klassischen Rock, und diese dröhnten täglich durch das Haus.

Rap ist momentan sehr auf Ignoranz beschränkt – am Sound allein erkennt man gar nicht mehr, woher die Leute kommen. Du hast deine eigene Note und deine Musik verrät, wo deine Wurzeln liegen. Woran liegt es, dass du dich nicht dem Rest der Pop-Rap Welle angepasst hast?

Gavlyn: Ich respektiere jeden Style, aber mich interessiert Pop einfach nicht. Mich interessiert auch dieses fake Girl-Power Movement nicht. Meiner Meinung nach, trennt es Rapper nur und kreiert Kategorien, wo eigentlich keine sein müssen. Es ist doch egal, ob ich weiblich bin oder nicht. Zumindest sollte es so sein. Wenn ich schreibe, versuche ich so viele Themen wie möglich anzusprechen, damit es neutral bleibt. Jungs sollten meine Musik genauso hören können und wollen, wie Mädels.

Wie ist es für dich jetzt zu touren und interviewt zu werden?

Gavlyn: Auf Tour zu sein ist ein Segen, Interviews machen mir nichts aus aber Photoshoots – oh Mann! Die sind nichts für mich! Ich weiss nie, wie ich posen soll oder was der Fotograf von mir will. Ich kann Make-up tragen und lass mich auch stylen, aber mit dem Posen klappt es noch nicht so wirklich (lacht). Interviews machen mir Spaß, aber diese Fotoshoots machen mich einfach nur nervös – ich bin keine fotogene Person, ich weiss nie, wie ich mich vor der Kamera benehmen soll. Die Fotografen sollen mir einfach sagen, was sie wollen und ich folge ihren Anweisungen. Die besten Fotos von mir entstehen, wenn niemand zuguckt, sprich wenn ich sie selber schiesse. Abgesehen davon, habe ich noch niemanden, der sich professionell um meine PR kümmert. Momentan mache ich das, also muss ich auch immer vorher fragen, worüber wir reden werden, was für Fotos gemacht werden und so weiter.

Was für Musik hörst du persönlich?

Gavlyn: Nicht genug Hip Hop! Ich mag Gorillaz, ich mag Portishead sehr und Amy Winehouse. Rapper, die mir gefallen sind Kendrick Lamar, Mos Def, Schoolboy Q und das gesamte Black Hippie TDE Kollektiv.

Für mich klingt deine Musik nach Golden Era. Hast du das Gefühl, du konkurrierst mit dem oberflächlichen und inhaltslosen Rap, der gerade so erfolgreich ist?

Gavlyn: Ich glaube, gerade weil die Musik, die ich mache so anders klingt, steht sie nicht in Konkurrenz zu dem, was man sonst so hört. Ich denke aber auch nicht, dass irgend jemand anderes in Konkurrenz zueinander steht, weil jeder seinen eigenen Sound hat. All die neuen Rapper sind ungefähr im gleichen Alter und bekommen jetzt eine Plattform, um sich zu zeigen und das wäre so ziemlich der einzige gemeinsame Schnittpunkt. Wobei Kendrick natürlich schon sehr viel weiter ist als ich (lacht). Wir sind alle keine Radio-Rapper, obwohl ich manchmal einen ganz leichten Druck spür - Adidas

Straight from the West Coast IGN presents the young and talented Gavlyn and the start of her journey and why She Got Next!
Gavlyn is a 22 year old female rapper born and raised in the San Fernando Valley California. She has been developing her rapping style since she was 15 years old. Being from the West Coast Gavlyn rapping style reflects her West Coast heritage. The influence is evident when she is demonstrating her hardcore (“gangster”) rap. However, her style of rapping doesn’t solely reflect her West Coast heritage. Her style of rapping has some East Coast tendencies as well. Big L and Eminem are just a few of the artists that have influenced her East Coast style of rapping. Gavlyn’s first album From The Art was released in October of this year. From The Art album mirrors Gavlyn’s conditions during her teenage years. The Golden Era, 90’s rap and Gavlyn’s interest in spoken word at the time all served as inspirations to the making of the From The Art album. We sat down with Gavlyn and got know this West Coast Rapper.

1.Who is Gavlyn? “Gavlyn is a 22 year old girl born and raised in San Fernando Valley California. I been rapping since the age of 15 and I’m 22 right now and I’m going to keep on going. That’s who I am at this moment.”

2. What makes you different from any other female rappers? “I’m different from other female rappers because of my outlooks and the homework I have done with Hip Hop music. I try my best to make this a timeless thing and to be the new voice of this generation. As well as inspire the kids of today’s generation and every woman out there.”

3. How does your west coast heritage influence your style of rapping? “I would say the G-Funk style has had the most influence on my rapping especially because I was raised with this kind of music as kid. My West Coast heritage has influenced my word play. My West Coast heritage brings out my roots, when I’m try to be on the more “gangster” rap tip however, I’m far from a gangster.”

4. If you were born and raised in the East Coast, would you still consider having a West Coast influence on your style of rapping? “I would have a little bit of both. I would defiantly say East Coast has a huge influence on my word play in general. A Lot of the rappers that I have study and lookup to as role models are from the west coast like Big L and Eminem.”

5. Who are some artist you would love to collaborate with? “Kanye West and the Gorillas”

6. Talk about your album from the art what as your inspiration when creating this album?
“I started working on that album around the age of 17. From The Art shines light on what I was into at that time. Such as the type of music I was heavy on (Golden Era and 90’s rap). My album is my prospective of being in today’s generation. My album is very poetic and reflects the Golden Era. Besides being heavy into Hip Hop my inspiration to create my first album was the challenge of actually creating an album. I wanted see if I could really do it. I was at a point in my life where I didn’t have much going on for myself. I was going through a lot personal problems and my music was all I really had.”

7. What can your listeners expect from you in the near future? “I’m going on tour in Europe 2013”

8.Why do you got next?
“I got next because I have been paying dues for a minute. I have influenced a lot of people and I’ve gained a lot of reputation in a short amount of time. I emphasize so much on the fact of being the voice of today’s generation and just making my main focus to add a new piece to Hip Hop. I plan on making Hip Hop a timeless thing that no one else can do in my kind of way.” - I Got Next Magazin
